About this picture

The Geithain district was a district in the Leipzig district of the GDR . From 1990 to 1994 it existed as the district of Geithain in Saxony . Today, its area is largely in the district of Leipzig . The seat of the district administration was in Geithain .

geography

location

The Geithain district was on the southern edge of the Leipzig lowland bay .

Neighboring areas

The district of Geithain bordered in a clockwise direction in the northwest on the districts of Borna , Grimma , Rochlitz and Altenburg .

Natural space

The Geithain district was in the Saxon mountain and hill country. It extended from the Leipzig lowland bay in the northwest into the central Saxon loess loam area. Accordingly, the land rose gradually to the south from about 170 m in height near Bad Lausick to 260 m. Only about 5% of the district area was forested. Larger forests were Stöckigt and Streitwald between Frohburg and Kohren-Sahlis and the Schildholz southwest of Bad Lausick. Most of the Kohrener Land conservation area was located within the district area.

history

Former building of the Geithain District Office (2018)

The law on the further democratization of the structure and functioning of the state organs in the states of the German Democratic Republic of July 23, 1952 resulted in an extensive district reform in the GDR and the five remaining states . On July 25, 1952, the federal states were dissolved and 14 districts were established. Here traditional circles were dissolved or divided into smaller circles, whereby there were also changes of area beyond the borders of the former five countries. The Geithain district was formed from the Borna and Rochlitz districts and assigned to the Leipzig district , the town of Geithain became the seat of the district .

The following 37 municipalities were initially part of the Geithain district:

Altmörbitz , Bad Lausick , Benndorf , Buchheim , Dolsenhain , Ebersbach , Elbisbach , Eschefeld , Flößberg , Frauendorf , Frauenhain, Frohburg , Geithain , Gnandstein , Greifenhain , Hopfgarten , Kohren-Sahlis , Narsdorf , Nauen grove , Nenkersdorf , Neukirchen , Lower Gräfenhain , Upper Pickenhain , Ossa , Prießnitz , Roda , Streitwald , Syhra , Tautenhain and Wickershain .
Breitenborn , Dölitzsch , Jahnshain , Langenleuba-Oberhain , Obergräfenhain , Rathendorf and Wernsdorf .

As a result of reclassifications across district boundaries and changes in the municipal area, the number of municipalities fell to 21 by the time the district was dissolved at the end of July 1994:

  • December 4, 1952: Steinbach is reclassified from the Altenburg district to the Geithain district
  • December 4, 1952: Neukirchen-Wyhra is relocated from the Geithain district to the Borna district
  • January 1, 1956: incorporation of Oberpickenhain in Rathendorf
  • January 1, 1956: Steinbach and Wernsdorf merge to form Niedersteinbach
  • April 4, 1973: Streitwald is incorporated into the city of Frohburg
  • July 1, 1973: Dölitzsch incorporated into Narsdorf
  • January 1, 1974: Wickershain is incorporated into the town of Geithain
  • January 1, 1974: Elbisbach is incorporated in Prießnitz
  • January 1, 1974: Ballendorf is reclassified from the Grimma district to the Geithain district
  • January 1, 1994: The town of Bad Lausick is reclassified from the Geithain district to the Grimma district
  • January 1, 1994: Niedergräfenhain is incorporated into the town of Geithain
  • January 1, 1994: Relocation of Buchheim and Ebersbach from the Geithain district to the Grimma district and integration into the city of Bad Lausick
  • January 1, 1994: Langenleuba-Oberhain and Niedersteinbach merge to form Langensteinbach
  • January 1, 1994: Flößberg, Frankenhain, Hopfgarten, Prießnitz and Tautenhain merge to form Eulatal
  • March 1, 1994: Syhra is incorporated into the city of Geithain

On May 17, 1990 the district was renamed the Geithain district . On the occasion of the reunification of the two Germanys, the district Geithain was in October 1990 by the ländereinführungsgesetz the re-established land Saxony awarded. During the first Saxon district reform on August 1, 1994, it was almost completely absorbed in the district of Leipziger Land , two communities (Breitenborn, Langensteinbach) came to the district of Mittweida .

economy

In the district, industrial production took a back seat to agricultural production. The fertile farmland was largely tilled with wheat, sugar beets and oil crops. Forage crops and root crops were grown as a feed base for pig and cattle husbandry in the LPGs for animal production. The industry was limited to small and medium-sized enterprises. The VEB Baustoffkombinat, VEB Emaillierwerk and VEB Musikelectronic Geithain brickworks were located in Geithain , a silicate factory for coke oven linings, a mill and slipper factory were located in Bad Lausick, a textile printing factory, a cardboard factory and an upholstery factory were located in Frohburg VEB Kunsttöpferei was important in Kohren-Sahlis.
Other important companies in the district were

  • VEB large laundry facility Geithain
  • VEB Limona Geithain
  • VEB upholstered furniture Frohburg
  • VEB Linen Union plant in Frohburg

Kohren-Sahlis and Frohburg were old pottery towns in Kohrener Land, in the spa facilities of Bad Lausick around 5000 patients were treated annually for cardiovascular diseases. The " Frohburger Dreieck " in the southwest of the city was known as a car and motorcycle race track . The Romanesque Gnandstein Castle from the 13th century was a tourist gem.

traffic

The F 7 from Gera via Geithain to Rochlitz , the F 95 from Leipzig via Frohburg to Karl-Marx-Stadt and the F 176 from Leipzig via Bad Lausick to Döbeln served national road traffic .

The railway lines Neukieritzsch-Frohburg-Karl-Marx-Stadt , Leipzig-Bad Lausick-Geithain , Rochlitz-Narsdorf-Penig and Altenburg-Langenleuba-Oberhain ran through the Geithain district . The Wyhratalbahn transported people and goods from Frohburg to Kohren-Sahlis until 1967 .

License Plate

Motor vehicles (with the exception of motorcycles) and trailers were assigned three-letter distinctive signs starting with the pair of letters SI from around 1974 until the end of 1990 . The last number plate series used for motorcycles was UA 80-00 to UA 99-99 .

At the beginning of 1991 the district received the distinctive sign GHA . It was issued until July 31, 1994. It has been available in the Leipzig district since November 9, 2012 due to the license plate liberalization .
