The Frohburg – Kohren-Sahlis line (also known as the Wyhratalbahn ) was a branch line in Saxony . It ran in the valley of the Wyhra from Frohburg to Kohren-Sahlis .

history

As early as the 1860s there were plans for a railway line through the Wyhratal, but the Kieritzsch – Chemnitz line later passed the small town of Kohren about 5 km away . From the 1880s onwards, new railway construction was required. Such petitions were rejected in 1882 and 1887, but in the mid-1890s an expansion of the Frohburg train station, about 6 km away, was enforced. In the spring of 1896, the construction of the Frohburg – Kohren branch line was finally approved.

The first preparatory work for the railway did not begin until 1901. However, some landowners wanted to achieve such a high price for their land that construction came to a standstill for the time being. After a new route was measured, the actual construction work began in 1905. Since no complex construction work was necessary, the line was ceremoniously opened a year later, on April 26, 1906. Regular operation took place from May 1, 1906.

On May 27, 1967 the passenger train service, on December 31, 1967 also the freight service was stopped. The line was dismantled by 1972.

In the 1990s, the Friends of the Kohrener Railway Association was founded with the aim of building a museum station at the old locomotive shed in Kohren-Sahlis. Vehicles have already been collected and tracks laid for this purpose. However, due to legal and economic difficulties, these plans had to be abandoned.

The track body of the Wyhratalbahn is still completely preserved today. It is re-used by a cycle path.

Route description

course

Starting from Frohburg station on the Neukieritzsch – Chemnitz line , the line to Kohren-Sahlis initially ran directly south, where at 1.72 km the Frohburg Ost stop on the “Am Harzberg” road was reached. Then the route led in the valley of the Wyhra to the southeast to Streitwald , whose stopping point of the same name was at 3.60 kilometers. Today there is a parking lot there. Further in the direction of Kohren-Sahlis, the railway line initially followed the course of the Wyhra, and later that of the Obergräfenhainer-Rathendorfer Bach. The southwestern edge of the city of Kohren-Sahlis was reached at the ruins of Kohren Castle . The city's train station was reached at km 7.75. The station building has been preserved to this day.

Frohburg

Entrance building of Frohburg station (2012)

Frohburg station was opened on April 8, 1872 with the Neukieritzsch – Chemnitz line. The importance of the station only began with the opening of the railway line to Kohren-Sahlis in 1906. For this purpose, a new section of the station was built south of the existing facilities. The reception building, which consists of a central building and two two-and-a-half-storey side wings, has been owned by the city of Frohburg since 2012. With the cessation of rail traffic on the line to Kohren-Sahlis in 1967, the importance of the station declined again. Today the dismantled station has only two tracks in addition to the reception building, of which the main platform has been made barrier-free. A short remnant of the branch line to Kohren-Sahlis is still used as a siding. Since December 2013, Frohburg station has been a station of the Central German S-Bahn .

The station had a residential building, a toilet and a car body on high-rise buildings. The Frohburg Ost stop was closed on May 28, 1967. At the location at the intersection “Am Harzberg” / “Greifenhainer Straße” in the east of Frohburg there is now a parking lot. The “Schützenhaus” restaurant, after which the station was originally named, is located west of the railway line on Greifenhainer Straße.
