Erich Preuss

Erich Preuß (born February 26, 1940 in Zittau ; † April 3, 2014 in Berlin ) was a German railroader , specialist journalist and non-fiction author .

Life

During the GDR era, Erich Preuß worked as a skilled worker at the Deutsche Reichsbahn , including almost 15 years as a dispatcher in Cottbus and Zittau. He studied traffic engineering and law with a degree in law . He later worked as an editor for the railroad newspaper Fahrt frei .

Since the late 1970s, Erich Preuß has published numerous specialist books on the subject of railways , some of them together with his twin brother Reiner . He initially focused on various East German narrow-gauge railways and then wrote several books about train accidents after German reunification - including a monograph on the ICE accident in Eschede - and worked in The Reichsbahn Report: 1945-1993. Facts, Legends, Backgrounds (1993) the history of the former GDR state enterprise. Together with Karlheinz Hartung, he wrote the Chronicle of German Railways 1835–1995 (1996) and dealt with the history of electric train operations in Germany ( Trains under Electricity , 1998). In addition to his works on the history of the railways in Germany , Preuss has published several books since the mid-1990s that illuminate various aspects of railway system technology and rail operations .

After the turn of the millennium he brought out three books in which he deals with the history and development of the Deutsche Bundesbahn and its successor, the Deutsche Bahn : The Torn Railway 1990-2000 (2001), Railway accidents at Deutsche Bahn and Bahn in transition ( both 2004). Preuss also wrote a biography of the English engineer and main founder of the railroad industry, George Stephenson , published in 1987 .

Preuss published most of his books with Transpress Verlag , some with GeraMond Verlag . He was also the editor of the loose- leaf collections published by GeraMond-Verlag, Munich, Das was the DR, Deutsche Reichsbahn. The large archive of GDR rail traffic and the large archive of German train stations .

Preuss was a regular employee of the railway magazine Bahn Extra and also wrote about railway issues for the socialist daily newspaper Neues Deutschland .

Erich Preuß lived and worked in Berlin, where he died on April 3, 2014.
