The year 2014 was international from the Ukraine crisis , the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East , exacerbated by the transnational occurrence of violent organization Islamic State , as well as the Ebola fever epidemic struck in West Africa. At the time, 2014 set a heat record in several Western and Central European countries, including Germany and Austria, and was generally the warmest year in Europe since weather records began. In Germany , the Edathy affair and the car toll planned for 2016 were an important topic, but also Germany's victory at the World Cup in Brazil .

From a global perspective, 2014 was the hottest year in some countries (e.g. Germany, Austria, France, Great Britain, Sweden) since NOAA weather records began in 1880. The average temperature over land and seas was 14.6 degrees Celsius ( 0.69 degrees Celsius higher than the mean temperature of the 20th century, 13.9 degrees Celsius). This was announced by the NOAA ( National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration , a US agency). Nine of the ten warmest years globally since 1880 are therefore in the 21st century. There is no sign of a trend reversal in global warming . In Germany, the mean temperature was in double digits for the first time (10.3 degrees Celsius).
