The Auto Mobil International ( AMI ) from 1991 to 2014 by the Leipziger Messe organized automobile show. It started in 1991 under the name Auto - but Safe and was renamed AMI - Automobil International in 1996 . Many innovations in the automotive sector were presented, including over 100 world, European and German premieres. AMITEC , a trade fair for vehicle parts , workshops and service, took place parallel to AMI .

For a long time the AMI had difficulties positioning itself next to the IAA in Frankfurt. Since 2010 the fair has only been held every two years, alternating with the IAA. In the non-IAA years, the even-numbered years, the AMI achieved attractive visitor numbers, in 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012 consistently over 270,000 visitors, whereby in 2008 the visitor record was achieved with 293,000. In 2014, the number of visitors fell significantly compared to 2012, by 44,000 to 242,000.

In 2016 the fair was supposed to be moved back to its original location in April, but things turned out differently. After 13 of the 22 brands registered in January 2016 were withdrawn quickly in February 2016, the AMI was canceled at short notice in its 25th anniversary year.

There were no publicly known plans at the end of March 2017 for a possible restart of the trade fair in 2018.
