  • 1858 : In Japan , fummies are abolished. By entering them publicly, in case of doubt, it was possible to prove that there was no adherence to Christianity .
  • 1931 : Vatican Radio broadcasts the message Qui arcano Dei Consiglio from Pope Pius XI at 4:30 p.m. and thus starts transmitting, initially on a trial basis.

Disasters

  • 1944 : The sinking of the British troop carrier Khedive Ismail by the Japanese submarine I-27 in the Indian Ocean kills 1,297; only 214 survivors are saved. I-27 is sunk by the destroyer HMS Petard that same day ; only one member of the Japanese occupation survives.
