Gerhard Rühm
Gerhard Rühm (born February 12, 1930 in Vienna ) is an Austrian writer , composer and visual artist .
biography
Rühm studied piano and composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. After his studies he took private lessons from the twelve-tone composer Josef Matthias Hauer . Since the early 1950s he has been producing sound poems , spoken texts, visual poetry , photomontages and book objects. He is co-founder of the Wiener Gruppe (with Friedrich Achleitner , HC Artmann , Konrad Bayer and Oswald Wiener ) and also publisher of the anthology of the same name . The inspiration for his art was u. a. August Stramm , Kurt Schwitters , Gertrude Stein , Carl Einstein and Paul Scheerbart . From 1972 to 1996 he was professor at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg and from 1978 to 1982 president of the Graz Authors' Assembly . Rühm's works are located in the border area between music, language, gestures and the visual. His audio productions are outstanding examples of the new radio play and acoustic art . He has also written numerous works of experimental poetry for two voices, which he performs together with his wife Monika Lichtenfeld (born 1938, married since 1976). According to a statement by Rühm in a documentary from 2010, this type of text arose from the desire to take his wife on his reading tours. During a stay in Lebanon, he studied Arabic music. His work has been awarded numerous prizes. Michael Fisch has been publishing his collected works since 2005 . Gerhard Rühm himself manages the estate of Franz Richard Behrens and is the editor of Konrad Bayer's work. Since 1978 he has been a member of the Free Academy of the Arts Hamburg . In 2009 he received the Alice Salomon Poetics Prize and on January 25, 2010 an honorary doctorate from the University of Cologne . The photographer and director David Rühm is Gerhard Rühm's son. Gerhard Rühm has lived in Cologne for decades.
