Klaus Kastberger (born April 19, 1963 in Gmunden , Upper Austria ) is an Austrian Germanist and literary critic (including for ORF , Die Presse and Falter ). He became known to a wide audience as a juror for the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize .

Life

Kastberger passed the Matura at the Bundesgymnasium Gmunden and then studied German Philology and History at the University of Vienna . He wrote a diploma thesis on Konrad Bayer and obtained his doctorate in 1991 with a thesis on Friederike Mayröcker under Wendelin Schmidt-Dengler .

From 1996 to 2015 Kastberger was a research assistant at the literature archive of the Austrian National Library . During this time, he also held regular courses at the University of Vienna. In November 2003 Kastberger submitted his habilitation thesis ("On the obstinacy of writing. Production methods of modern Austrian literature") at the University of Vienna. In December 2004 he received the Venia legendi for the subject of modern German literature . In March 2015, he took over a professorship for modern German-language literature at the Franz Nabl Institute of the University of Graz and at the same time headed the Literaturhaus Graz . In October 2019, his appointment as head of the Literaturhaus was decided by the local council for the next five years until 2025.

Kastberger has held numerous lecture and teaching commitments at home and abroad, he leads research projects, designs exhibitions and is always active in the media as a literature expert. He is the general editor of the new historical-critical edition on the work of Ödön von Horváth , which has been published by de Gruyter since 2009 . His research focus is on Austrian literature of the 20th and 21st centuries.
