Bernhard Seuffert

Bernhard Joseph Luther Seuffert (born May 23, 1853 in Würzburg , † May 15, 1938 in Graz ) was a German philologist .

Life

After attending the grammar school in his hometown, he studied Classical Philology, History and German Philology in Würzburg and Strasbourg and completed his studies with a state examination to qualify for teaching at Bavarian grammar schools. He received his doctorate in 1878 with a thesis on the painter Müller's Faust . This was followed by his habilitation in Würzburg in 1877 with a thesis on The Legend of Count Palatine Genoveva . In 1886 he was appointed to the University of Graz, initially as an associate professor, from 1892 as a full professor. In addition to the painter Müller, his work focused on the works of Goethe and Wieland . He was the editor of several volumes of the Weimar Sophia edition of Goethe's works and, with his Prolegomena, which appeared in several publications from 1904, worked out the prerequisites for the historical-critical edition of Wieland's works.
