Anton Emanuel Schönbach (born May 29, 1848 in Rumburg ; † August 25, 1911 in Schruns ) was an Austrian German scholar, cultural and literary scholar.

Life

Originally from northern Bohemia, Schönbach came to Vienna as a child , where he graduated from the Piarist high school in 1867. He then studied at the University of Vienna , where he received his doctorate in 1871. The habilitation in 1872 dealt with the rhyming prose of St. Cäcilia, the inaugural address the development of the Grail saga.

In 1873 Schönbach became an associate professor at the University of Graz , in 1876 a full professor. He worked out the statutes for the first seminar for German philology to be founded in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and was full professor from 1876 to 1911.

Schönbach became a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in 1895 and a full member in 1903 . He was a corresponding member of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences since 1906. In 1903 he was appointed court advisor.

In 1911 Anton Emanuel Schönbach died during his long summer vacation in Vorarlberg , where he had initiated the foundation of the Montafon Heritage Protection Association . He was buried in Graz . In 1932 the Schönbachgasse in Vienna- Hietzing was named after him.

Schönbach was co-editor of the Graz Studies on German Philology (1895-1900) and editor of the Old German Sermons (1886-1891). The focus of his work was on old German and medieval literature. He was also an employee of the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie .
