Karl Hoppe (Germanist)

Karl Hoppe (born October 21, 1892 in Osterwieck , † June 27, 1973 in Braunschweig ) was a German German studies scholar and Wilhelm Raabe researcher.

Life

Hoppe obtained his Abitur in Blankenburg and then studied German, history and philosophy at the universities of Heidelberg , Leipzig and Berlin . In Berlin he was in 1920 with a thesis on Georg Büchner Dr. phil. doctorate and then worked as a teacher for German at the Leipziger Volksakademie . At that time he joined the SPD. He was married to the literary scholar Else Hoppe (1897–1973) since 1921 .

In 1927 Hoppe moved to the TH Braunschweig , where he completed his habilitation in 1929/30 (third attempt). From 1932 to 1961 he was professor of German language and literature there. From 1933 to 1936 he was dean of the cultural studies department, in which his institutional activities went beyond that of a participant.

After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists , he joined the NSDAP and the Nazi teachers' association in 1933 . Since 1935 he was also a member of the Nazi Lecturer Association and from 1937 to the Nazi Reich Warrior Association . During the time of National Socialism he was the editor of Gottfried Keller's works . In 1939 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht .

After the end of the Second World War , he was returned to the chair in Braunschweig in 1947, which he held until 1961.

Hoppe's research interests were above all in Wilhelm Raabe, whose work he had published in the Braunschweig edition since 1951. From 1957 he was President of the Raabe Society for 14 years , of which he was subsequently appointed Honorary President. He founded the Raabe yearbook in 1960. In 1968 he was awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his research work. Since 1970 he has been a full member of the Braunschweig Scientific Society .
