Essam El-Hadary ( Arabic عصام الحضري, DMG ʿAṣṣām al-Ḥaḍarī ; * January 15, 1973 in Damiette ) is a former Egyptian soccer goalkeeper . He was rated as one of the best African goalkeepers and was honored as the best goalkeeper at the 2006 African Cup of Nations. During the 2018 World Cup , El-Hadary became the oldest player ever to appear in a World Cup game (45 years and 161 days).

Career

Essam El-Hadary started his professional career in Damiette . In 1996 he moved to al Ahly Cairo , where he played for almost twelve years.

In 1997 he made his debut in the Egyptian national team . El-Hadary was Egypt's hero in the penalty shootout of the 2006 African Cup of Nations final against Ivory Coast , where he saved Didier Drogba and Bakari Koné's penalties . In February 2007, he became a hero a second time by saving Khaled Melliti's penalty and winning the CAF Super Cup for his club. Al-Ahly defeated the Tunisian club Étoile Sportive du Sahel in Addis Ababa 5: 4 on penalties after stoppage time had ended 0-0. This was the third CAF Super Cup that El-Hadary won with his club. His goal is well-known, in which he hit the CAF Super Cup 2002 against the South African club Kaizer Chiefs from over 60 meters away. That game ended 4-1 for Al-Ahly.

In spring 2008 El-Hadary signed a contract with the Swiss club FC Sion . This move was accompanied by disputes between the two clubs. Only after switching on FIFA did he receive the game permit for his new club in April. In his first season he was a regular player, but in the spring he lost his place between the posts to his rival Nicolas Beney . Essam El-Hadary disappointed in many games. As a result of his move, FIFA imposed a one-year transfer ban on FC Sion at the beginning of June 2009 for inciting El-Hadary to breach his contract. However, the club management disregarded this ban. President Christian Constantin takes the position that the transfer ban only affects the amateur section of the club. The professional department is run by the AG “Olympique des Alpes”.

He was nominated for the African Cup of Nations in 2017 , but was initially not used in the first group game. After goalkeeper Ahmed El-Shenawy was injured in the 25th minute, the then 44-year-old El-Hadary was substituted on and stayed in goal in the following games up to and including the final, which he lost 2-1 to Cameroon. In the semifinals against Burkina Faso he was able to save two penalties in the decisive penalty shoot-out and Egypt moved into the final for the ninth time. On June 25, 2018, he completed his 157th international match during the 2018 World Cup in Russia . El-Hadary was with his appearance against Saudi Arabia at 45 years and 161 days the oldest player who has so far played in a soccer World Cup . Second in this category is the Colombian goalkeeper Faryd Mondragón , who was 43 years and 3 days old in the third group match at the 2014 World Cup.
