The Zamalek Sporting Club ( Arabic نادي الزمالك, DMG Nādī az-Zamālik , in German often also Zamalek Kairo ) is an Egyptian football club from Giza in the greater Cairo area .

history

The club was founded on January 5, 1911 by the Belgian lawyer George Marzbach, an eminent member of his guild in Cairo at that time, to whom the honorary title Bey was later awarded, under the name Nile Palace Club (نادي قصر النيل / "Nadi Qasr al-Nayl") founded. It was named after a guest house of the Cairo Tramway Company, the Cairo Tramways Company, on a bank of the Nile island of Gezira in the heart of the city, which Marzbach considered suitable for the seat of a sports club. Today the casino is located here. The purpose of the association was to give a sporting home to those who, as non-British, were not allowed to join their institutions. Since Marzbach had close ties to the establishment, the association immediately enjoyed great popularity. In 1913 it was renamed the Cairo International Sports Club (نادي القاهرة المختلط / "Nadi al-Qahrt al-Mukhtalit"), often abbreviated as CISC. In 1917 nationalist forces gained the upper hand and the association was ruled by Egyptians from then on.

In 1920 the footballer Tewfik Abdullah became the club's first legionnaire and over the next few years he played in the English Premier League and in the professional American Soccer League . In 1921 the CISC footballers won the Sultan Hussein Cup with a 2-1 victory over the 2nd Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters, making them the first non-British team to win a title.

From 1941 on they called themselves Faruq in honor of the king. After the revolution of 1952 , the club was given its current name al-Zamalek SC , after the club's headquarters in the Zamalek district of Cairo at the time. Zamalek SC later moved to its current headquarters on Straße des 26. Juli , about 500 meters west of the Zamalek Bridge, an area in the greater Cairo area that is officially part of Gizeh.

The club plays its home games at the 74,100-seat Cairo International Stadium . The derbies with local rivals al-Ahly are very emotional. Foreign referees must be brought into the country on a regular basis to direct the games. Zamalek celebrated his greatest success in the derby in 1943 with a 6-0 victory in the cup final. The biggest defeat was a 6-1 in a league game of the 2002 season.

After al-Ahly, the club is the most successful club in Egypt. So far, the club has won twelve Egyptian championships and 27 cup competitions. Zamalek SC celebrated its greatest international successes in 1984, 1986, 1994, 1996 and 2002 when it won the CAF Champions League and in 1987 and 1997 also won the intercontinental Afro-Asian Cup . On February 8, 2015, at least 22 people died in rioting outside the Air Defense Stadium . The incident was with its 22 deaths after the disaster of the Helmi Zamora stadium with 48 dead and after the riots in 2012 in Port Said with 70 dead the third largest stadium disaster in Egypt.
