Rami Shaaban (born June 30, 1975 in Stockholm ) is a former Swedish football player . The goalkeeper , who was used several times in the Swedish national team , played in Egypt, England and Norway in the course of his career.

Career

Shaaban was born the son of an Egyptian and a Finnish woman . He has both Swedish and Egyptian citizenship .

Shaaban started his career at Saltsjöbadens IK . In 1995 he moved to Cairo to study. He was briefly active for Zamalek SC before joining Ittihad Osman . After returning to Sweden, he played for the second division Nacka FF . From there he moved to the first division club Djurgårdens IF after the end of the 1999 season . In August 2002 he left the club, which at the end of the season won the double from the Swedish championship and Svenska Cupen .

Shaaban moved to Arsenal FC . There, however, he was denied a breakthrough. Not least because of several injuries, including a broken leg, he only made five appearances at the English club, including three games in the Premier League . In January 2004 he was therefore loaned to West Ham United , where he was not used at all. He then joined Brighton & Hove Albion , for which he came to six games in the Football League Championship .

For the 2006 season Shaaban moved to Fredrikstad FK in the Norwegian Tippeligaen , where he was able to establish himself as a regular goalkeeper. In February 2008 his return to Sweden was announced, he signed a five-year contract with Hammarby IF and is said to have cost about four million crowns. In Hammarby he was first number one between the posts, but lost that status in mid-2008. He only returned to the team in July 2009. After the relegation of his club at the end of the 2009 season , he remained loyal to the club. However, after four game days in the Superettan , he injured himself. It was only used again in September 2011. He ended his career at the end of 2011.

On May 25, 2006 Shaaban made his debut in the Swedish national team. Against the Finnish national team , he remained in the 0-0 draw without conceding a goal. In the following years he established himself in the national team and advanced to the second goalkeeper in the Swedish national team behind Andreas Isaksson . In the role of substitute, he was nominated by national coach Lars Lagerbäck for the 2006 World Cup and the 2008 European Championship . He completed the first group game against Trinidad & Tobago for the injured Isaksson in Germany in 2006 and remained without conceding a goal.
