Hammarby IF , officially Hammarby idrottsförening ( German : Hammarby Sportvereinigung ), colloquially Bajen (formerly Hammarbaj ), is a Swedish sports club from Stockholm .

It was founded in 1889 as Hammarby Roddförening ( German : Rudervereinigung ), but changed its name eight years later, as more sports than rowing were practiced. The club's most successful sports are handball , bandy , ice hockey , soccer and speedway .

ice Hockey

Hammarby's ice hockey division was founded in 1921 and went bankrupt in 2008. Hammarby was Swedish ice hockey champion eight times (1932, 1933, 1936, 1937, 1942, 1943, 1945 and 1951). The home games usually took place in the Arena Hovet . Most recently, the team played in the second-rate HockeyAllsvenskan . In the meantime there is again an ice hockey department, which has played its way up to the third class hockeyettan .

Bandy

The bandy department was founded in 1905. The association was a founding member of Bandyallsvenskan , which started on January 6, 1931. Since then, the club has always played in the highest or in the second-highest division. The club was able to take part in eight championship finals (most recently in 2010) and became Swedish champions in 2010 . In addition, Hammarby IF Bandy won the Bandy World Cup (Ljusdal World Cup) three times : 1999, 2001 and 2009.

Handball

Hammarby's men's team plays handball in the highest Swedish league, the Handbollsligan (formerly Elitserien ). In the team played among others the record national player Staffan Olsson , who works as a coach today. In the 2005/06 season, the team won the Swedish championship for the first time . A year later (2006/07) Hammarby successfully defended the championship title. In the 2007/08 season Hammarby was able to secure the title for the third time.

Soccer

The football department was founded in 1915. In the same year Klara BK , three years later (1918) Johanneshovs IF joined the association. She was one of the founding members of Allsvenskan , but was relegated after the first season . As a result, the team was in lower leagues and was an elevator team in the 1950s and 1960s .

It was not until the 1970s and 1980s that Hammarby IF was able to remain in the Allsvenskan for a longer period of time and in 1982 made it the runner-up behind IFK Göteborg . In the 1985/86 season , the club succeeded in the UEFA Cup after successes against the Bulgarian representative Pirin Blagoevgrad and FC St. Mirren the move into the second round. There, however, after a 2-1 home win in the second leg , they had to admit defeat by 1: 3 against 1. FC Köln and were eliminated. After the team was able to place itself in the league in the following years, things went downhill from 1986 and in 1988 the club was bottom of the table and was relegated. The immediate rise was successful, but again only the place at the bottom of the table jumped out in the House of Lords. From 1994 the team played again first class, in 1995 they were relegated again.

After being promoted again in 1998, Hammarby IF was one of the best teams for some time, as evidenced by the Swedish championship in 2001 and the runner-up two years later. In 2009 , however, the team rose again to the Superettan . In 2015 the club made it back to the Fotbollsallsvenskan .

Since 2013, the club has been playing together with city rivals Djurgården in the new Tele2 Arena with a closable roof and 33,000 seats.

The club's anthem is Just idag är jag stark (German: “I'm strong today”) by Kenneth “Kenta” Gustafsson.
