Crew from 1905

The association was founded on October 4th, 1904 in Gothenburg . In addition to football, the club also has bowling , athletics , orienteering , skiing and speed skating .

The club colors are blue and white, nicknames are Blåvitt (blue and white) and Änglarna (the angels). The actual home stadium is Gamla Ullevi , but the larger Ullevi has often been used for games with a high audience response . On January 9, 2007, the demolition of the old stadium began and a new, pure football stadium was built bearing the same name. It was officially opened on April 5, 2009.

The club leads the all-time table of Allsvenskan , the highest Swedish football league. He has been the Swedish football champion 18 times and won the UEFA Cup twice ( 1982 and 1987 ).

The club will play city derbies in Allsvenskan against GAIS and BK Häcken , and the duels with the Stockholm clubs AIK , Bajen and Djurgården are also considered explosive .

history

The years in the second division (1970-76)

Many IFK fans can still remember when the club only played in the second division in the 1970s. After winning the title in 1969, the club surprisingly rose in the following season, so that in the following years the largest club in Gothenburg found itself in the second division. It was not until 1976 that IFK made a comeback in the first division as the sovereign leader of the then Division 2 (today: Superettan ). The highlight of the year was the game against GAIS in the Ullevi Stadium in front of over 50,000 spectators. After returning to the Allsvenskan, the manager Bernmar built a new team with young players such as Torbjörn Nilsson , Glenn Hysén and the brothers Tord and Tommy Holmgren . The club also bought national players such as Björn Nordqvist , Ralf Edström and Ove Kindvall and thus ran into financial difficulties.

Winning the UEFA Cup in 1982 and 1987

The unexpected title in the 1981/82 UEFA Cup eased the situation in the club again and at the same time meant the greatest success in the club's history. IFK Göteborg sensationally won the two finals against Hamburger SV 1-0 in Göteborg and then 3-0 in Hamburg 's Volksparkstadion . Players like Torbjörn Nilsson , Dan Corneliusson , Glenn Hysén , Glenn Strömberg and Tord Holmgren became club legends. The coach of the 82 team was Sven-Göran Eriksson , who moved to Benfica Lisbon after the win . IFK Göteborg became both Swedish champions and cup winners in the same year, winning the triple . On the way to the UEFA Cup final, the IFK had won against clubs like FC Valencia and 1. FC Kaiserslautern .

The greatest success in the European Cup of national champions came in 1986 when IFK reached the semi-finals. In their first game, IFK won 3-0 against FC Barcelona at Ullevistadion, with Torbjörn Nilsson as man of the game. However, they lost the second leg 3-0 and then the penalty shoot-out. In 1987 IFK won the UEFA Cup for the second time. In the final they beat Dundee United .

Title wins non-stop (1990-96)

The club celebrated new successes in the 1990s. Between 1990 and 1996 IFK was Swedish champion a total of six times and also took part successfully in the European Cup and the Champions League . New stars like Jesper Blomqvist , Joachim Björklund , Magnus Erlingmark and Andreas Andersson played in the club and in the Swedish national team. IFK Göteborg had a number of players in the legendary Swedish World Cup squad in the USA 1994 : Thomas Ravelli , Stefan Rehn , Mikael Nilsson and others. v. a. - Goalkeeper Ravelli became a great World Cup hero because he was able to save two penalties in the quarter-finals against Romania.

Times in midfield of the league and the title in 2007 (since 1997)

After winning the title in 1996, IFK Göteborg “only” came second in the next season and bought many new players in the years to come, but most of them never made the breakthrough. The formerly successful club played without luck and coaches like Mats Jingblad were sacked. In 2004 IFK Göteborg celebrated its centenary. 2007 won the championship again after eleven years. Otherwise, however, they mostly only occupied places in the midfield of the league and ended the 2011 season in seventh place.

The fans from IFK Göteborg cheer over a goal.
