The GAIS ( Gothenburg Atlet & Idrottssällskap , dt .: Gothenburg athletes and sports society ) is a Swedish football club in Gothenburg , who is currently in the Swedish second division, the Superettan plays. Due to the green and black striped sports shirts worn by the players, the team has been nicknamed makrillarna (" the mackerel ").

history

The club was founded in 1894 and was able to call itself Swedish champions for the first time in 1919. Also in 1922 GAIS won the final, which was decisive for the championship, against Hammarby IF with 3-1. In the year Allsvenskan was founded in 1924/25 , GAIS was able to win it, but there was no official championship title for it. The same thing happened in 1927 . After it was determined that the winner of the Allsvenskan is also a champion, GAIS won the titles of 1931 and 1954.

After that, GAIS became a so-called "elevator team", which often commuted between the different game classes. The year 1955 was typical: According to a new regulation, three teams had to be relegated from the Allsvenskan . GAIS only finished third from last and had to relegate to Division 2, which was second class at the time .

The local derbies against IFK Göteborg are particularly interesting for GAIS and their fans . In 1976 they achieved an audience record for the second Swedish division with around 50,000 spectators.

From 1954 to 1968 the club had an ice hockey department . This took part in the seasons 1957/58 and 1960/61 in Division 1 , the then still highest Swedish division.
