Halmstads Bollklub (short Halmstads BK , HBK ) is a Swedish football club from Halmstad . Founded on March 6, 1914 , the club has won four Swedish championship titles and one cup victory. He is known for his success even though the squad and budget are always tight.

history

Early years

In 1909, the first football club, BK Wasa , was established in Halmstad . However, this soon disappeared, only the Wasaplanen sports field named after him remained. Several football teams played on the pitch, including a team that had given itself the name Viking . The members of the team decided to give themselves an organized framework and founded the Halmstads Bollklub on February 7, 1914 , which joined the Riksidrottsförbundet in March .

In 1915, Halmstads BK first took part in a competition when the team met IS Halmia and IFK Halmstad in the local cup series . There she finished last in the first two years before she was able to improve in the following years and in 1918 for the first time reached the final of the district championship, in which she was defeated by IS Halmia. Two years later they made it to the final again, this time they defeated Falkenbergs IF 4-0. The following year they defended their title against IS Halmia and won another title with a 5-0 win over Halmstads IF in the Hallandspostens Cup .

As the winner of the regional Hallands series , Halmstads BK reached the Sydsvenskan in 1923 , at the time one of the first regional leagues in Sweden. When the Allsvenskan was founded the following year , the club missed the qualification and stayed in the now second-rate Sydsvenskan . After a second place in the first second division season behind local rivals IS Halmia, the team moved into the promotion round to Allsvenskan as the season winner in the following year. There she failed against IF Elfsborg after a 3-1 home win and a 2-4 defeat away by a further 2-4 defeat in the playoff. In the following years, the team established itself in the front area of the southern second division season. At the same time, she often competed against international opponents, for example, to celebrate the club's 15th birthday, she met the German club SpVgg Sülz 07 .

Between Allsvenskan and the second division

1933 reached Halmstads BK for the second time as a season winner before BK Drott and IFK Malmö the promotion round to Allsvenskan. There the team met Krokslätts FF and decided both games for themselves, so that the club rose to the first division for the first time. In the premier season 1933/34 for the club, the team reached fourth place and put Emil Carlsson for the first time a selection player of the Swedish national team . In the following season, the club found itself in the relegation battle and after only five wins this season, he had to relegate back to the second division at the end of the 1935/36 season.

Under the English coach Harry Bruce , Halmstads BK missed the direct return as runner-up behind Helsingborgs IF . On the 25th anniversary of the club in 1939 the relay victory succeeded, in the promotion round IFK Göteborg proved to be too strong with two wins. Even when they won the season again two years later, the team failed at a Gothenburg club, GAIS reached a 2-2 draw in the second leg for promotion after a 3-0 first leg win. HBK was only successful a year later and returned to the top class with a 2-1 home win against Lundby IF after a 1-1 draw in Rambergsvallen .

Halmstads BK achieved sixth place in the first year after the promotion, before it went against relegation in the following years, as in the first first division stay. The season 1945/46 ended the team bottom of the table and rose ten years after the first relegation again from the Allsvenskan. The club's youth team was more successful and moved into the final of the unofficial Swedish youth championship. The final game against the offspring of Allsvensk rivals AIK ended in a 4: 4 draw and HBK was able to win the title by drawing lots.

The stay in the second division lasted only one season. As the season winner, Halmstads BK moved into the promotion games, in which the team defeated the then reigning record champions Örgryte IS twice. With one point behind the last non- relegation place occupied by IF Elfsborg, they stood at the end of the 1947/48 season together with the same point Djurgårdens IF on a relegation place. In the following years, the team only narrowly missed the renewed rise as second or third in the table. After six years in the second division, she managed to return to the first division in 1954 as the season winner with twelve points ahead of runner-up IK Sleipner . There the newcomer knew how to surprise and took second place in the season after the promotion behind master Djurgårdens IF. As with the previous league stays, HBK could not build on the success of the first season and took places in the middle of the league in the following years. As before, it did not succeed in establishing itself in the league and at the end of the 1959 season, relegation to the second division was certain.

Crash into the third class and return

The 1960s began unsuccessfully for Halmstads BK in the second division, the team could not play for promotion. After they almost relegated to the third division in 1963, the following year surprisingly succeeded in winning the relay. In the promotion round, which has now been played in league format, she failed without winning a point as bottom of the table behind the other season winners Hammarby IF , GIF Sundsvall and Östers IF .

The brief soaring was followed by a direct crash when Halmstads BK in 1965 only occupied a relegation place in the second division and, together with Västra Frölunda IF and Göteborgs AIK, went into third division. The club is playing for the promotion, in 1966 and 1967 only succeeded in second places behind Västra Frölunda IF and Norrby IF, respectively. In 1968 the team dominated the league and created the relay victory and thus the return to the second division with ten points ahead of the table runner-up Varbergs BoIS . After initial places in the middle of the table succeeded in 1971 with 14 wins in 22 games of the relay win and as a table runner-up in the promotion round before Sandvikens IF and IF Saab, the return to the Allsvenskan. In particular, due to the lack of goal danger - only 14 goals this season in 22 games - the team ended the first division season in 1972 on the only relegation zone.

First title wins

Under the newly signed coach Sven-Agne Larsson , Halmstads BK took first place in Division 2 Södra and thus returned directly to the first class. First, the team played against relegation, which was avoided in the 1975 season only because of the better goal difference compared to GAIS. With the multiple Swedish national player Hans Selander , who had participated in the 1970 World Cup , the club made a significant commitment.

Before the 1976 season , Roy Hodgson took over the previous year's almost relegated team. He led the team to the top of the league and on the penultimate matchday they prematurely fixed winning the Von Rosens Cup as the Swedish national champion. In the 1977/78 European Cup , Halmstads BK failed at the East German representative Dynamo Dresden after a 2-1 home win and a 0-2 away defeat. In the league, the club could not build on the success for the time being and landed in eighth place twice in a row. In the 1979 season , the club returned to the top and the team around players like Rutger Backe and Lennart Larsson won the championship title for the second time. In the 1980/81 European Cup , the team was eliminated in the first round, as they did when they first played three years earlier, after a 0-0 home draw they lost 3-2 away at Danish club Esbjerg fB .

After Hodgson had left the club back to England for Bristol City in 1980, the Dutchman Jan Mak took over the coaching post. With the team around Mats Jingblad , however, he could not build on the successes. This slipped into midfield. Even after Maks left in 1984, she only achieved middle season placements under her successors Stefan Lundin and Kenneth Rosén . After an injury mishap in the 1987 season, the club was relegated and had to leave the first division after 14 years.

Second division and back on the road to success

Before the second division season in 1988, Stuart Baxter took over the coaching post at Halmstads BK. He led the club as a season winner due to the better goal difference compared to the same point competitor Mjällby AIF back in the Allsvenskan. With one point behind the fourth place in the table, occupied by Örebro SK , the club just missed participation in the championship finals. In 1991 the team was relegated to the second division in the autumn round, but managed to win the season there the following spring. In the autumn round she managed the direct re-emergence.

Not least because of the goals of Henrik Bertilsson , who together with Mats Lilienberg was the top scorer with 18 goals this season, Halmstads BK reached fifth place in the 1993 season . As a result, the team established itself in the league and reached the cup final against AIK in 1995, which was won with a 3-1 victory. This qualified the team for the European Cup Winners' Cup . There she made people sit up and take notice when they beat AC Parma with a 3-0 win in the first leg of the last 16 . Against the Italian club, however, the second leg was lost with a 4-0 defeat, so the Halmstader were eliminated from the competition.

1996 Tom Prahl took over the coaching position at Halmstads BK. After he had achieved seventh place in the table in the first year of his activity, he led the team to the third championship title in the club's history in the 1997 season . In the qualifying round for the 1998/99 Champions League round , she failed in the first round against Bulgarian champions Litex Lovetsch . This time the team stayed at the front of the table and qualified for the UEFA Cup regularly . In the 2000 season , the team around Håkan Svensson , Michael Svensson and Stefan Selakovic won another championship title with six points ahead of runner-up Helsingborgs IF.

At the end of 2001, successful coach Prahl left Halmstads BK and was replaced by Jonas Thern . Under his leadership only places in the middle of the league jumped out. After he resigned from his position at the end of 2003, his assistant Janne Andersson took over the coaching work. This led the club back to the top of the league. In the 2004 season , the team led the league until the last match day, before the competitor Malmö FF could overtake by a draw against IFK Göteborg .

Halmstads BK moved into the UEFA Cup as runner-up. In the first round of the 2005/06 UEFA Cup competition , the club beat last year's finalist in Sporting Lisbon . The first leg at home Örjans vall was lost 2-1, in the second leg with goals from Gunnar Heiðar Þorvaldsson , Tomas Žvirgždauskas and Patrik Ingelsten a 3-2 win after extra time. In the group stage, Halmstads BK met Hertha BSC , Steaua Bucharest , Sampdoria Genua and RC Lens , but were eliminated from the competition without winning a point.

Current developments

HBK in Örjans vall in September 2007 against Gefle IF

After the runner-up, Halmstads BK could no longer build on the successes and occupied places in the middle of the league in the following seasons. In the 2006 season , the team was briefly in danger of relegation, but was able to maintain the class with five points ahead of the relegation place.

In recent years, a number of players began their professional careers at Halmstads BK or used the club as a stopover for the jump abroad. Examples of this are names such as Dušan Đurić , Petter Hansson , Peter Larsson or Mikael Nilsson .

From 2008 to January 2012 Michael Görlitz , a former midfielder for the amateurs of FC Bayern Munich , was part of the club's squad and was named the club's best player in both 2008 and 2009.

However, Halmstads BK rose after a very bad 2011 season as the last and with only 14 points from the first Swedish league. In the following 2012 season , Halmstads BK was third in the Superettan and qualified for the relegation games for promotion to the Allsvenskan. Against GIF Sundsvall , the third-bottom from the first division, the club won the first leg 3-0 and in the second leg a 3-4 defeat was enough to advance.
