Petter Hansson (born December 14, 1976 in Söderhamn ) is a former Swedish football player . The defender , who made his debut in the Swedish national team in 2001 , won the Lennart Johansson Cup for the Swedish championship with Halmstads BK . During his career he played in his home country, the Netherlands and France and took part in two European Championship finals and one World Championship tournament.

Career

Breakthrough in Sweden

Hansson started his career at Söderhamn FF . In 1998 he moved to Halmstads BK and made his debut in the Allsvenskan on October 4 that year in a 1-1 draw with AIK . In the following year he had established himself as a regular on the club's defense. In the 2000 season he only missed one game of the season and contributed with four goals this season to the fourth championship title of the club from Halland .

Due to his constant performance, Hansson played his way into the notebook of national coaches Lars Lagerbäck and Tommy Söderberg , who nominated him for the international series at the beginning of 2001. On February 1 of the year he debuted at the 0: 1 defeat to Finland in the national jersey. This was initially his only international match, he kept his regular place through constant performance in the club and made himself known internationally.

Change abroad

In July 2002, SC Heerenveen , who played in the Dutch Eredivisie , announced the commitment of Hansson. After his former teammate Stefan Selakovic , who had already switched to the Frisian club in winter , he was the second purchase from Sweden within the year. Hansson signed a four-year contract with the first division club. Similar to his first professional station in Sweden, he was characterized by solid performances and immediately established himself as a regular player. As a result, he was used in his first season in all games and reached seventh place with the team. Due to his consistency, he returned to the national coach's field of vision and came to his next international matches in 2004. With the SC Heerenveen he reached fourth place in the 2003/04 season also qualifying for the UEFA Cup .

Ultimately, Hansson was included in the squad for the European Championship finals in 2004 , but could not prevail against the competition for Erik Edman , Olof Mellberg and Andreas Jakobsson and remained without tournament participation. In the international matches after the tournament was over, Hansson was able to establish himself in the squad not least because of his solid appearances for SC Heerenveen in the league and in the European Cup. Therefore he was part of the Swedish squad at the 2006 World Cup in Germany . The tournament was just as disappointing for him as the European Championship two years earlier, as he was again only a substitute for the set defensive formation around Edman, Mellberg and this time Teddy Lučić and could not prevail. For his only tournament appearance he came in the 0-2 defeat in the round of 16 against the German national team , when he was substituted on for Kim Källström after being sent off for Lučić to strengthen the defensive .

In February 2007, Hansson set a record for Swedish players with his 151 game in the honor division by hitting the previous record holder Mathias Florén . A short time later there were rumors of change about Hansson, who had had offers from Stade Rennes and Atalanta Bergamo . Eventually he left SC Heerenveen for France and signed on at Stade Rennes, where he met his compatriot Edman. On August 4, he made his debut in the 2-0 defeat against AS Nancy for his new employer in Ligue 1 and was also characterized by consistency in the French league, where he contributed to reaching sixth place in the table in 35 league games. Therefore, the now solely responsible national coach Lagerbäck included him in his squad for the 2008 European Championship . In the course of the tournament he was used in all three group games and contributed with a goal to the 2-0 victory over Greece . Nevertheless, he could not prevent the early departure.

Even after the tournament, Hansson was one of the regulars in both the club and the national team. While he reached seventh place in the league with Stade Rennes, the team managed to get into the final against second division club EA Guingamp in the French cup competition . This prevailed in May 2009, however, with two goals by the Brazilian Eduardo in a conceded goal by Hansson's teammate Carlos Bocanegra with a 2-1 win and was the second lower-class club in the history of the cup to win the competition. In the course of the following season the club offered him an extension of his contract, which expired in summer 2010, but he turned down the offer and moved within the league to AS Monaco . At his new club he was a regular player in the back four straight away .

After Hansson had not been considered for the national team since he missed the qualification for the 2010 World Cup in autumn 2009, the new national coach Erik Hamrén surprisingly appointed him in October of the following year for the qualifier for the 2012 European Championship against the Netherlands , as in the previous compulsory international match Mellberg was expelled from the field . In the 1: 4 defeat, however, he was ultimately on the bench for the entire game. In the championship, however, he was used regularly, but could not prevent the club's relegation to Ligue 2 at the end of the season despite his 30 season appearances . At the beginning of the second division season 2011/12 he was still a regular player, but was ousted from the defense in the second half of the season in particular by Gary Kagelmacher and Giorgos Tzavelas , who were obliged in winter . After speaking in November about a possible career end when his contract expires at the end of the season, he end of May 2012 through his agent Fabrice Picot official end of his career communicate.
