The Ligue 2 2011/12 was the 73rd staging of the second highest French football league . The season began on July 29, 2011 and ended on May 18, 2012. Second division champions were SC Bastia . The team managed to march through with the second promotion in a row from the third to Ligue 1 .

Beginning of the season were relegated from Ligue 1 that AS Monaco , Racing Lens and AC Arles-Avignon to from the third division rose SC Bastia , SC Amiens and Guingamp on.
The main game day was Friday, and there was usually one game each on Saturday and Monday.

In terms of names, the second division was very strong this season: 18 of the 20 teams have already belonged to the top division (D1 or L1) in the past , four of them ( Reims , Nantes , Monaco and Lens) were at least already once national champion with a total of 22 titles; only for Amiens and Clermont a promotion at the end of this season would have been a premiere. In addition, eight of the 20 clubs have won at least one cup in the past .

Regionally, the league participants concentrated on the north (eight clubs from Le Havre to Metz ) and the north-west (seven clubs in Brittany and on the lower Loire ) of the country. To the south-west of an arc from Nantes to the Rhône Delta , which is around a third of the continent's territory , second division football did not take place this season either (see map on the left)  - a situation that has existed since 2008 following the relegation of Chamois Niort and of FC Libourne-Saint-Seurin existed.

    Season course

In terms of sport, the first half of the season was marked by two surprises: two of the three first division relegated teams (Monaco and Arles-Avignon) found themselves almost continuously in the table cellar; As in Grenoble last year, they were threatened with a "march through" into the third division. And in the area of promotion places, two teams, Clermont and Reims, had established themselves from the start of the season, which were also not expected there. Autumn champions Clermont were the strongest away team in the first half of the season with 21 out of 30 possible points, while Reims stayed undefeated at home, where they only had to concede a draw with eight wins.

However, the issue of violence on and next to the grass pitches had an equally strong impact on the series. After the first 16 game days, an average of 4.2 players per game were cautioned, which is the highest figure in ten years; and the number of field references has almost doubled compared to the previous season. In seven games there were major riots to which the league association reacted with rigorous penalties against players, officials and clubs, four times alone in the SC Bastia stadium. The Corsican club therefore had to play a home game on the mainland, President Geronimi and Vice-President Francheschini - the latter even twice - received a temporary ban.

In the first half of the second half of the season Reims and especially Clermont (nine games without a win) weakened, without the main rivals Sedan, Troyes and Nantes being able to benefit from it. Only Bastia impressed with a series with only one defeat, sat at the top of the table and - after the table was "straightened" again due to numerous catch-up games (onset of winter in the first half of February) - at times eleven points ahead of the runner-up. In the lower quarter of the classification, Boulogne crashed downright, and Angers, Metz and Le Havre were increasingly in danger of relegation. Monaco and Arles-Avignon, on the other hand, were among the most successful teams in the second half of the season and thus pulled themselves out of the danger zone. Amiens was arithmetically the first relegated after the 34th matchday, Bastia after the 35th as the first promoted. On the last day of the game, only one question was decided, namely about the third relegated team.

At the end of the season, Bastia ("march through" from the third to the first division), Reims (stood on a promotion spot on all 38 matchdays and put the two most successful goalscorers with Fauré and Ghilas ) and Troyes (thanks to his consistency in the second half ) in the Ligue 1 on. Metz ( third-rate for the first time since the introduction of professionalism in France ), Boulogne and newcomer Amiens had to vacate their place for three promoted players from the National . These six clubs will be replaced by the first division relegated SM Caen , FCO Dijon and AJ Auxerre or - after homologation of the sporting results - the third division clubs Olympique Nîmes , Chamois Niort and Gazélec FCO Ajaccio .

During this season, after a full day of play, the following teams were on a place entitled to promotion (1st to 3rd place, left table) or a relegation place (18th to 20th place, right table). Matches that were played at a later point in time (catch-up games) are counted towards the match day on which they were originally scheduled. The actual promoters / relegators are marked in color.
