The Division 2 1936/37 was the fourth staging of the second highest French football league . Racing Lens became second division champions .
The games took place between August 30, 1936 and May 16, 1937. There was no winter break; point games were also played on Christmas days and New Year's.
societies
The 15 clubs that had not been promoted to the first division or given up their professional status after the previous season were eligible to participate . There were also two first division relegated teams. There were no newcomers who had assumed professional status for the first time this season.
The following 17 teams were represented this season:
- six clubs from the far north (relegated US Valenciennes-Anzin , Racing Lens , Racing Calais , AC Amiens , US Boulogne , Olympique Dunkerque ),
- four from Paris and Champagne-Ardenne ( CA Paris , Stade Reims , AS Troyes-Savinienne , FC Olympique Charleville ),
- one from the northeast ( FC Nancy ),
- two from the northwest ( Le Havre AC , SM Caen ),
- four from the southeast ( AS Saint-Étienne , relegated Olympique Alès , SO Montpellier , OGC Nice ).
There was only a direct promotion and relegation depending on the sporting result between the first and second professional division. On the other hand, a second division could only be relegated if he surrendered his license or if it was revoked, and previous amateur teams from Division d'Honneur could only be promoted to Division 2 for the following season if they received approval from the association , professional To adopt status.
Season course
Each team played a return match against each group opponent, once in front of their own audience and once away. The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement. If there was also a tie - like this season between Troyes and Amiens, where the quotient was still identical in the eighth decimal place - the overall result of the two direct encounters between these opponents decided. In France, when specifying the point ratio, only the number of plus points is given; here this is done in the notation used in Germany at the time of the 2-point rule. <
This season too, this time for Lens, there was a start-to-finish victory. In particular, their home strength contributed to the first ascent of the northern French, which meant that Racing only had to concede a draw in front of their own audience. The second promoted came from the north: relegated Valenciennes-Anzin succeeded in returning to Division 1 immediately . In contrast to Lens, the USVA was rather weak at home, but provided the most successful team in Division 2 away from home , and it also took them a few weeks to work their way up to second place in the table. From November she did not give it up again and also kept a clear lead over the Third Saint-Étienne. For the latter, this season was as disappointing as the previous one: their attackers had again scored close to 100 goals, but in third place the ASSE again narrowly failed because they left the points in a row away.
Of the teams in the lower quarter of the final rankings, Nancy and especially Paris had justified hopes for a place at the top until well into the second half of the season; Nancy was in a single-digit table position at the beginning of December and Paris even in March. Then, however, the thread of success broke in both, and only the permanent weakness of Reims and Calais - the bottom had only won one away point, which at least at Valenciennes - prevented Paris or Nancy from taking over the "Red Lantern".
For the following season , 14 of the 15 clubs in the table ranks three to 17 received their license renewed; only Amiens had not requested this. There were also the two first division relegated Stade Rennes UC and FC Mulhouse . In addition, nine teams from the non-professional third division, newly introduced in 1936/37, had received a professional license ( Racing Club Arras , Girondins Bordeaux FC , SR Colmar , FC Dieppe , AS Hautmont , US du Bassin de Longwy , Olympique Nîmes , Toulouse FC and US Tourcoing ), so that the second division started with 25 participants.
962 hits were scored in the 272 encounters; this corresponds to an average of 3.54 goals per game. This undercuts the negative record from the previous season.
