The Division 1 1935-36 was the fourth staging of the professional French football league. Champion was Racing Club Paris .
The first game day was August 22, 1935, the last game day was May 24, 1936. The official "winter break" lasted from December 26 to January 19 - however, Lille and Alès had agreed to play their game on December 29.
mode
Eligible were the clubs that had not finished the previous season worse than 14th place, and the two promoted from the second division , US Valenciennes-Anzin and CS Metz .
societies
This season the following teams played for the championship title:
- four clubs from the far north ( Excelsior AC Roubaix , Olympique Lille , SC Fives and US Valenciennes-Anzin ),
- two from Paris ( Racing Club , Red Star Olympique ),
- four from the northeast (defending champions FC Sochaux , FC Mulhouse , Racing Strasbourg , CS Metz ),
- one from the northwest ( Stade Rennes UC ),
- five from the Mediterranean region ( FC Sète , Olympique Alès , Olympique Marseille , AS Cannes and FC Antibes ).
Season course
The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal quotient was decisive for the placement.
The season started with a bang when defending champion Sochaux dismantled the promoted Valenciennes club 12-1, a result that has remained the highest victory in league history to the present ( 2012 ). But injuries, especially that of “ Trello Abegglen ”, and a keen competition prevented the “Werkself” from Peugeot with the company logo in the club crest (les Lionceaux) from being able to stand out early. Sète, Roubaix and Lille also took turns at the top of the table during the first half of the season.
After the winter break, it was the Alsatians from Strasbourg who, with a lead of up to three points, had legitimate hopes of winning the title. But then the hour of the racing club from the capital struck . It was there that coach Sid Kimpton had introduced the World Cup system , and the team also had the players to implement it. At first sight rather unattractive due to the man coverage, Racing proved in the end with 81 hits that it could be played quite successfully and well. Regular goalkeeper Hiden refused to fulfill his contract until the end of February, even went back to Vienna and had to be replaced by Francis Roux during the first 22 point games . On the third from last game abducted Paris by a hit Mathes points from the Meinau and also benefited from the fact that the remaining title rivals Lille and Strasbourg continued working schwächelten. After the club of President Jean Bernard-Lévy had already won the cup final at the beginning of May , Racing Paris became champion and second doublé winner after FC Sète in 1934 .
In the lower half of the table, Mulhouse, Red Star, Valenciennes and Alès were not stable enough. Here, too, the decision was only made on the last day of the game, and it was razor-thin: Red Star only saved the slightly better goal difference from relegation. For the following season 1936/37 Valenciennes and Alès were replaced by the second divisions FC Rouen and Racing Roubaix . This made the industrial city on the Belgian border the second next to neighboring Lille to have two clubs in France's upper house of football.
