The Division 1 1980/81 was the 43rd staging of the professional French football league. Champion was the tenth time since 1957 , the AS Saint-Etienne .
The first game day was July 24, 1980, the last game day was June 2, 1981. This time there was a longer winter break between December 20 and January 25.
societies
The clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than 17th were eligible to participate, as well as two direct promoters from the second division and the winner of the relegation round . Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:
- three clubs from the far north ( OSC Lille , US Valenciennes-Anzin , Racing Lens ),
- two from Paris and Bourgogne ( Paris Saint-Germain , promoted AJ Auxerre ),
- four from the northeast ( FC Metz , AS Nancy , Racing Strasbourg , FC Sochaux ),
- four from the northwest (defending champions FC Nantes , Stade Laval , SCO Angers , promoted FC Tours ),
- one from the southwest ( Girondins Bordeaux ),
- five from the southeast ( AS Saint-Étienne , relegation winner Olympique Lyon , Olympique Nîmes , OGC Nice , AS Monaco ),
- one from Corsica ( SEC Bastia ).
Season course
The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement.
From the start of the season a duel for the championship developed between Saint-Étienne and Nantes, in which, apart from the first few weeks, no other title contender was able to intervene. The distance between Verts and Canaris - the players of the two clubs were and will be named as "green" or "canaries" or "yellow" because of their dress colors - was never more than two points, so that the decision was actually not made until matchday 38 fell. The direct clashes between the two opponents each ended in a draw. The decisive factor for the fact that in the end the ASSE got the upper hand was their away strength; in the opposing stadiums they got 26:12 points, three more than the FCN. In addition, there was an almost "historic" 0-1 home defeat of the Yellows against newly promoted Auxerre, with which the men of coach Guy Roux ended an impressive series at the beginning of April 1981 at the Stade Marcel-Saupin : Nantes lost again for the first time after 92 unbeaten games since May 1976 a point game in front of their own audience.
For Saint-Étienne this season, with the tenth title win, also meant the end of a good decade and a half of dominance in French football; Beaudet calls this "the last crown before the crash". In the spring of 1981, rumors first surfaced in public that President Roger Rocher was running a “black box” - a suspicion that soon became a certainty and would lead to Rocher's resignation the following year. And unlike FC Nantes, which had been constantly struggling with the ASSE for supremacy in France since the mid-1960s and also won five championships during this time, it did not win a single national title for over three decades.
In the table basement, the descent of Angers and the "crocodiles" from Nîmes was already clear after 36 laps. However, four teams still fought for the relegation place until the last match day, three of which were then only separated by the goal difference. After all, it was the newcomer from Tours who had to go into the barrages against the second division third; the team around top scorer Onnis then managed to stay up against FC Toulouse . For the following season supplemented from the 2nd Division Stade Brest and Montpellier La Paillade SC the circle of the first division.
