Jean-François Larios (born August 27, 1956 in Sidi bel Abbès / Algeria ) is a former French football player .

The club career

Jean-François Larios was born in Algeria, France, and came to Pau in Aquitaine with his parents as a result of the Algerian War . There he played as a child and adolescent at two small clubs before the midfielder was accepted into the junior school of Saint-Étienne at the age of 17 on the recommendation of his coach, the father of AS Saint-Étienne professional Jean-Michel Larqué . He was built up there and used in two national teams ( Équipe de France junior and Équipe de France espoir ). His coach Robert Herbin built him for the first time in the 1974/75 season in a division 1 game , at the end of which les Verts , as the footballers of ASSE are called in France, were able to defend their national championship title. In the following year, Larios was sporadically considered in the league team (three appearances) - initially the competition was too strong with players like Bathenay , Janvion , Lopez , Piazza on the defensive, Larqué , H. Revelli , Rocheteau and Santini in midfield and attack star-studded eleven. In 1976/77 he was used more often, but was still not part of the regular formation and also not part of the team that won the cup final against Stade de Reims .

Larios then moved to SEC Bastia in 1977 , where he prevailed in the left midfield position and was also used in all 12 UEFA Cup matches that the Corsican surprise team up to the two finals (0-0 and 3-0 against PSV Eindhoven ) led. On the way there he had also scored one goal each against AC Turin and Carl Zeiss Jena . After that season he returned to Saint-Étienne; alongside the indestructible Jacques Santini and, from 1979, by Platini and Rep , Jean-François Larios had become an integral part of a top-class midfield. Between 1978 and 1982, spared from unfortunate injuries, he played 137 first division games for the Verts , was French champion in 1981, was twice in the final for the Coupe de France and was also a national team player . He scored various goals, often with long-range shots from around 20 meters away from the goal or with penalties; he has also made at two UEFA Cup matches from which they still swarm in Saint-Etienne: the end of 1979 at 6: 0 against PSV Eindhoven in the domestic Stade Geoffroy-Guichard , and in November 1980 at 5: 0 in the Volksparkstadion over the HSV . That year he was even voted France's Footballer of the Year . During his time at St. Etienne, a fight in the dressing room with Michel Platini made headlines: Larios had taken Platini's wife Christèle, who left him with both children.

In the 1982/83 season this career collapsed almost overnight: an injury threw the 26-year-old far back. He only completed 11 point games for ASSE. At the end of this season he took the supposedly easier route, moving to the lower class Montpellier La Paillade , then back to the first division ( Racing Strasbourg , OGC Nice and again Montpellier), but could no longer assert himself there permanently.

Larios then worked as a player's agent. In this capacity, he was sentenced in 2007 for embezzlement, fraud and other offenses in connection with three player transfers from 1997 and 1999 to a two-year suspended prison sentence, a € 200,000 fine and a five-year ban.

In November 2017, Larios confessed to having doped with Captagon during his playing career .

The national player

From October 1978 to July 1982 Larios played 17 international matches for the Equipe Tricolore , scoring five goals. The fact that he was not called up more often was due to the fact that he was in competition in midfield with Michel Platini , Alain Giresse , Jean Tigana and Bernard Genghini . At the World Cup in Spain he was part of the French squad , but was only used in the first round game (1: 3 against England ) and in the final match for third place (2: 3 against Poland ).
