Alain Giresse (born August 2, 1952 in Langoiran near Bordeaux ) is a former French football player and current coach .
The player
Stations of his club career
The only 1.63 m tall Giresse played most of his professional career, from 1970 to 1986, at Girondins Bordeaux , for which he played 516 first division games (with 159 goals) and 21 games in European cup competitions (with 7 goals). From 1986 to 1988 he let his active career end at Olympique Marseille , where he added another 66 games (and another five goals) in Division 1 to his record .
With Bordeaux he was twice champion (1984 and 1985) and once cup winner (1986) in France, three times (1982, 1983 and 1987) as French footballer of the year and in 1982 by the sports newspaper L'Équipe as France's sportsman of the year (“ Champion des champions ») elected.
The national player
Giresse formed together with Michel Platini , Jean Tigana and Luis Fernández in the 1980s what is known as the "magic square" of the exceptional midfield of the French national team under coach Michel Hidalgo . In 1982 he took part in the World Cup in Spain, where France finished fourth. Giresse scored a regular goal against Kuwait. That goal was illegally revoked after a Kuwaiti sheik put pressure on the referee. In the legendary semi-final against Germany , Giresse had increased to 3-1 for France before Germany equalized. In 1984 he won the European championship for national teams with the Èquipe Tricolore . He played his last international match at the 1986 World Cup in the semi-finals, which France lost 2-0 to West Germany.
He played a total of 47 international matches between 1974 and 1986, scoring six goals. In 1982 he was voted second place behind Paolo Rossi in the European Footballer of the Year election.
The trainer
The stations where Alain Giresse worked as a coach after the end of his active career include FC Toulouse (1995–1998), although only a four-month interlude at Paris Saint-Germain (1998), then again at Toulouse (1999–2000) . This was followed by a commitment from 2001 to 2003 at FAR Rabat ( Morocco ); from March 2004 to the end of 2005 Giresse was national coach of Georgia .
Since the beginning of 2006, he was in charge of the Gabonese national team , which failed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup against Cameroon. As runners-up in the group, Gabon was able to qualify for the Africa Cup in 2010 , where Gabon failed in the preliminary round. Due to the early elimination from this competition, the Gabonese Football Association announced in February 2010 that the contract with Giresse would not be extended. Giresse then signed a contract as national coach for Mali . At the Africa Cup of 2012 , he led the Mali national team to the top of the continent, as his “eagles” - the Malian players are called Aigles - won the game for third place against Ghana 2-0. In May 2012, however, Giresse resigned from his position as national coach because he felt that the term of the extension contract presented by the association was too long. In January 2013 Giresse signed a two-year contract as national coach in Senegal , which ended after the preliminary round at the Africa Cup 2015 . Since December 2018 he has been the coach of the national soccer team of Tunisia .
