Award ceremony after the final of the Africa Cup in 2015

The Africa Cup (officially English Africa Cup of Nations and French Coupe d'Afrique des Nations ; in German-speaking countries less often also (soccer) Africa championship ) is a soccer tournament organized by the African soccer association CAF , in which the African national soccer associations determine their continental champions. The current winner of the Africa Cup in the year in which the FIFA Confederations Cup is held is qualified for this tournament.

To distinguish the Africa Cup of Nations from the African Nations Cup (African Nations Championship) , a tournament are eligible to play in the only players who play in the national championships of their home countries.

In 1957 the Africa Cup was launched. The finals have been held every two years since 1968. In 2010, the CAF decided to hold the Africa Cup in uneven years with effect from 2013 , so that it does not coincide with the World and European Championships in one year.

In the first edition in 1957 there were only three participants: Egypt , Sudan and Ethiopia ; South Africa wanted to participate but was excluded due to apartheid politics . Since then, the tournament has grown continuously, so that a qualifying round was necessary. In 2019, 24 teams will take part in the Africa Cup for the first time. From then on, the following mode applies: the teams play a preliminary round in six groups of four teams. The two best teams in each group and the best four thirds in the group reach the final round, which - beginning with the round of 16 - is played in the knockout system .

The most successful nation in the previous editions of the Africa Cup is Egypt, which has secured the title seven times and won three tournaments in a row in 2006, 2008 and 2010. Cameroon with five and Ghana with four titles follow in second and third place.

First participations

Up to and including the Africa Cup of Nations 1974, there was always at least one national football team that took part in an Africa Cup of Nations finals for the first time. Below is a list of the 43 first-time participants, each with the flags and names valid at the time. In addition, seven countries are listed in brackets, which for the first time only took part in an Africa Cup under a new name. A total of 56 national football associations are represented in the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF).

  • Teams in bold became African champions when they first participated.
  • Teams in italics were hosts when they first participated.
  • Teams in brackets participated for the first time under a different name.

1 The Tunisian national team withdrew from the game after 42 minutes (when the score was 1: 1) - the game was then scored 2-0 for Nigeria.
2 The 2014 tournament was brought forward to 2013. In future, the Africa Cup will be held in odd years so as not to coincide with the World Cup .
3 Morocco was suspended as host in November 2014. A new host was announced on November 14, 2014.
4 Libya was originally supposed to host the tournament, but after its withdrawal due to the effects of the civil war, Gabon was appointed as substitute host.
5 After Cameroon was withdrawn as host in 2019, the country was assured that it would host it in 2021. This means that the hosts are moving from 2021 and 2023 to 2023 and 2025.
6 Before the venues were postponed by two years each, Ethiopia , Uganda and Zambia had expressed interest in the 2025 event.

The trophies

In the history of the competition, three different trophies have been presented to the respective winners. The victorious association was allowed to take permanent possession of the first two trophies after winning the third title. After that, counting began all over again for all associations.

The first trophy was the "Abdel Aziz Abdallah Salem Trophy" , named after the first president of the CAF, the Egyptian Abdel Aziz Abdallah Salem . Ghana received this silver trophy after winning its third title in 1978.

The also silver “Trophy of African Unity” or “African Unity Cup” was awarded from 1980 and went to Cameroon in 2000 after winning the third title. The trophy was presented to the CAF by the Supreme Council for Sports in Africa before the 1980 tournament and featured a long silver cylinder with the contours of the African continent and the Olympic rings and long triangular handles.

A third, now gold, trophy ( "African Cup of Nations" ), which was designed and manufactured in Italy, has been awarded since 2001 . According to the rules of the Africa Cup, this third trophy will not become the permanent property of a three-time winner as it has been before. It is owned by the CAF and will be awarded as the winner's trophy in upcoming tournaments. The winners of the Africa Cup will receive a replica. As a special honor, Egypt received a full-size copy for winning this cup for the third time in 2010 .
