The 1962 Africa Cup ( English : African Cup of Nations , French : Coupe d'Afrique des Nations ) was the third game of the African continental football championship and took place from January 14 to 21 in the Abyssinian Empire . Organized by the African continental football federation Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF), four teams took part this time from the Empire of Abyssinia , the United Arab Republic (Egypt and Syria), Tunisia and Uganda . The game was played again in the knockout system from the semi-finals, for the first time a qualification was held in which the field of nine applicants was reduced to four, with hosts Ethiopia and defending champions United Arab Republic automatically qualifying for the final round. All games in the final round were played in the Addis Ababa Stadium in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa .
The host's team won the title for the first time and became African champions in football.
