  • The Africa Cup 2017 ( French Coupe d'Afrique des Nations , English Africa Cup of Nations ) was the 31st edition of the African continental football championship and took place in Gabon . The winner of the Africa Cup, hosted by the African Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF), qualified for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia.

    Award

    The organizers of the Africa Cup in 2015 and 2017 were determined in January 2011 at a meeting of the continental association CAF in Lubumbashi , Congo . After the Democratic Republic of the Congo withdrew , South Africa and Morocco were the only applicants for the host. Morocco was preferred for 2015 and South Africa was to host the Africa Cup of 2017.

    Due to the civil war in Libya in 2011 , Libya, as the host of the 2013 championship, and South Africa agreed on an exchange of hosting rights at the end of August 2011. South Africa took over the event for 2013 , while Libya was to host the event in 2017. Due to ongoing fighting between hostile militias , Libya decided on August 23, 2014 to forego its host rights completely, so that the tournament was re-awarded. The African football association CAF announced that interested nations could apply to host the event until the end of September 2014. In the first quarter of 2015 it should be decided which nation will host the Africa Cup. Seven associations applied, and in November 2014 the CAF selected four associations that met the application criteria:

    The following were eliminated from the application process:

    On April 8, 2015, Gabon was named as the host. Gabon already hosted the Africa Cup in 2012 , at the time together with Equatorial Guinea .

    Group stage

    The game was played in four groups of four, with the first and second groups qualifying for the quarter-finals. If at the end of the group stage there was a tie between several teams, the following order was used:

    a) higher number of points in direct comparison ;
    b) better goal difference in direct comparison;
    c) higher number of goals scored in direct comparison;
    d) If, after applying criteria a) to c), several teams still have the same ranking, criteria a) to c) are reapplied, but only to the matches between the teams concerned in order to determine their final ranking.

    If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria e) to g) are applied:

    e) better goal difference from all group matches;
    f) higher number of goals scored in all group matches;
    g) Drawing by the Organizing Committee.

The other jersey suppliers were: Macron (Togo), Erreà (Uganda), Umbro (Zimbabwe), kappa (Burkina Faso), Qelemes (Guinea-Bissau), O'Neills (Congo), Uhlsport (Tunisia), Romai (Senegal) and Airness (Mali).

    Television broadcast

    The tournament was not broadcast live on television in Germany. Potential candidates such as Sky Deutschland , Sport1 and the sports streaming service DAZN did not secure any transmission rights. Also Euro Sport which was broadcast live all Africa Cup since 1994, was only in the possession of broadcasting rights for the United Kingdom, Portugal and Spain. Likewise, no buyers could be found for the broadcasting rights in Austria and Switzerland.

    In January 2017 it was finally announced that the sports betting provider bet365 had secured the online broadcasting rights for Germany and other countries and then showed the games on its website in a live stream.
