Umbro, Ltd is a British clothing and sporting goods manufacturer that has been part of the US company "Iconix Brand Group" since 2012. From 2007 to 2012 Umbro belonged to the sports brand group Nike .
history
The group was founded in 1920 in Wilmslow , Cheshire , England as "Humphreys Brothers Clothing", but changed its name in 1924 to UMBRO, an abbreviation of the old name, H um phreys Bro thers (Harold Humphreys (1902–1974) and Wallace Humphreys). In 1985 Umbro unveiled its first football boot in Brazil , which went into production two years later.
On October 23, 2007, the US sporting goods manufacturer Nike announced that it would take over its British competitor. Umbro was continued as an independent brand. At the end of 2012, Nike found a buyer for Umbro in Iconix. The English national soccer team played in Umbro jerseys for the last time in the international test match against record world champions Brazil on February 6, 2013, and since then the “ Three Lions ” have been directly outfitted by Nike.
Umbro is not the first company to buy Iconix from Nike: The Starter brand was taken over from the sports multinational as early as 2007.

Umbro has equipped many well-known teams since the company was founded; the first was Manchester City in 1934 , which won the FA Cup that year . Other teams have since played at times or still use Umbro products: Nottingham Forest (whose former chairman Nigel Doughty was also the chairman of Umbro), Everton FC , West Ham United , Chelsea FC , IF Elfsborg , SC Austria Lustenau , Glasgow Rangers , Ajax Amsterdam , Celtic Glasgow , Fortuna Düsseldorf , 1. FC Nürnberg (since 2016/17), 1. FC Kaiserslautern , Tennis Borussia Berlin , SpVgg Greuther Fürth , VfL Bochum , Olympique Lyon , CD Lugo , Galatasaray Istanbul , Orduspor , Beşiktaş Istanbul , LASK , CSKA Moscow , Spartak Moscow , Dinamo Zagreb , Hajduk Split , Korona Kielce , Wisła Krakau , FC Santos , FK Željezničar Sarajevo (since 2018/19), FC Energie Cottbus , SV Babelsberg 03 , SG Wattenscheid 09 , Universitario de Deportes , SSV Ulm 1846 , Stuttgarter Kickers , FC Schalke 04 and Werder Bremen (since 2018/19).
The national teams of Brazil , England , Ireland , Mexico , Norway , Azerbaijan , Taiwan , Sweden and Serbia were or will be equipped by Umbro.
During the Soccer World Cup in England in 1966 , 15 of the 16 participating teams wore Umbro jerseys, and at the 2006 World Cup with Sweden and England two more. Umbro equipped the national team of Peru for the 2018 World Cup .
