The Amsterdamsche Football Club Ajax , AFC Ajax for short and known in German-speaking countries as Ajax Amsterdam , is a football club from the Dutch city of Amsterdam . Together with Feyenoord Rotterdam and PSV Eindhoven , Ajax Amsterdam is one of the most successful clubs in the Netherlands. He is the Dutch record champion with 34 titles and has belonged to the top Dutch league, the Eredivisie , since it was founded in 1956 without interruption. Ajax is one of five clubs - alongside Juventus Turin , FC Bayern Munich , FC Chelsea and Manchester United - that have won the Champions League (1971–1973, 1995), the UEFA Cup (1992) and the European Cup Winners' Cup (1987) have won.

history

Beginnings

Some students of the "Hogere Burgerschool" (HBS) ( high school ) at the Weteringschans founded a football club in a café on Amstelveenseweg in 1883. They first gave it the name Union , but renamed it Foot-Ball Club Ajax in 1894 , after the ancient Greek hero Ajax . After an argument, most of the members left the club, which then fell apart. On March 18, 1900, Han Dade, Floris Stempel and Karel Reeser started the club again. Stempel became the club's first chairman.

For many years Ajax used the club's De Meer Stadium in the Watergraafsmeer , a polder in the southeast of the city. For games against Feyenoord Rotterdam and other big clubs, as well as in the European Cup, they moved to the larger Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam from 1928.

His first European Cup participation reached Ajax Amsterdam with the qualification for the European Cup of national champions in the season 1957/58. In the round of 16, the team met the GDR representative BSG Wismut Aue . After a 3-1 win in Aue , the Erzgebirge were defeated 1-0 a week later in Amsterdam. In the quarter-finals they were eliminated by Vasas Budapest (2: 2 and 0: 4).

1970 to 1977: the golden years

1971 European Champion Clubs' Cup final vs. Panathinaikos

The 1970s were more successful: Under the coaches Rinus Michels and Ștefan Kovács , the team from Amsterdam with players like Johan Cruyff , Johan Neeskens , Horst Blankenburg or Arie Haan won the European Cup three times in a row between 1971 and 1973. In the finals of 1969 they were still defeated by AC Milan and in 1970 only spectators at the first triumph of a Dutch team in this competition (arch rival Feyenoord Rotterdam beat Celtic Glasgow), the most important of all European trophies was won in the following three years and was thus allowed to stay in the canal city . This phase represents the most successful in club history and gave Ajax the reputation of a prestigious European club. During this time, Amsterdam thrilled with offensive football , which was later able to inspire worldwide as " total football " thanks to the Dutch national team .

The World Cup was brought to Amsterdam in 1972 when they played 1-1 and 3-0 against Independiente from Argentina. In 1971 and 1973, the European representative did not participate, not least because Johan Cruyff suffered serious injuries when he won in 1972.

In 1973 Cruyff left his home club to join FC Barcelona in Spain. The European hegemony ended and, after the great successes of previous years, things also went downhill at national level. Only in 1977 was another championship to be celebrated. While still a benchmark nationally, European successes became rare in the late 1970s and 1980s.

1978 to 1991: years of upheaval

Between 1980 and 1986, the club never got past the second round in European competitions. Johan Cruyff's return in 1981 couldn't change that much either, despite winning two championships. After Cruyff's second departure from Amsterdam as a player, he returned to Amsterdam as the new coach in 1985 and ushered in a new era. With young players like Wim Kieft , John van 't Schip , Marco van Basten , Gerald Vanenburg , Jesper Olsen , Dennis Bergkamp and Frank Rijkaard as well as Cruyff in the coaching bench, the European Cup Winners' Cup was won in the final against 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig in 1987 as well reached the final of the following season against KV Mechelen . However, the success again ensured that important players left the club. Van Basten and Rijkaard were to spend successful years with Milan in Italy in the following years and Johan Cruyff also left the club once more, this time also to celebrate great success as a coach at FC Barcelona. In addition, Ajax was excluded from UEFA competitions after the state incident for the 1990/91 season. At national level, PSV Eindhoven emerged as a major competitor for the national championship in the 1980s .

1991 to 1997: The van Gaal era

When Louis van Gaal took office in 1991, the second most successful period in the club's history was to begin. In its very first season, Ajax won the UEFA Cup , becoming the second club after Juventus Turin to win all three European cups. But this success also resulted in a playful bloodletting: Dennis Bergkamp and Wim Jonk left Ajax for Inter Milan . However, it was possible to celebrate the return of Frank Rijkaard, who has since become one of the best defensive players in the world in Milan and Saragossa.

And the Ajax school also bore fruit again. In the 1994/95 European Cup season, the German record champions FC Bayern Munich were impressively thrown out of the competition in the second leg in the semi-finals . In the final, the club under coach Louis van Gaal won the Champions League 1-0 in Vienna over AC Milan .

In the 1995/96 season they reached the final of the Champions League again with a team that was still partly successful from the previous year, but lost to Juventus Turin on penalties . In the same season, however, the World Cup was won against Gremio Porto Alegre in December .

In August 1996, Ajax left its previous De Meer stadium and moved to the Amsterdam Arena . The last game in the old stadium ended 5-1 against Willem II Tilburg , at the same time this was the farewell game for many long- serving Ajacieden . As a result, many players could not be held again - Clarence Seedorf , Edgar Davids , Patrick Kluivert and Jari Litmanen , among others , gradually left the club.

Louis van Gaal also left the club in 1997 and moved to FC Barcelona, his successor being former Danish international Morten Olsen . He built an almost completely new team around players like Michael Laudrup , Sunday Oliseh and Schota Arweladse and surprisingly won the championship in 1998 with a large lead (17 points on PSV Eindhoven). At the European level, however, the success was not great, Spartak Moscow presented too great a hurdle in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup in 1998.

1998 to 2010: roller coaster ride

On May 11, 1998, Ajax Amsterdam was the first Dutch football club to go public .

Morten Olsen was followed by trainers Jan Wouters and Co Adriaanse , who were unable to build on the successful period in the mid-1990s.

In the early years of the 21st century, Ajax Amsterdam tried to build on old successes with coach Ronald Koeman , among others . In the 2004/05 and 2005/06 seasons they were the favorites to win the championship, but both times the Ajacieden disappointed and Eindhoven won the honorary division title.

Having started the 2006/07 season with great ambitions, the team of new coach Henk ten Cate suffered a severe setback at the beginning when the Champions League qualification was lost with a 2-0 home game against Copenhagen . That same season, Ajax missed the championship due to a single goal, but won the Dutch Cup against AZ Alkmaar 8-7 on penalties. Then Ajax defeated Alkmaar in the playoff final (1: 2, 3: 0) and thus secured participation in the qualification for the Champions League. Ajax did not manage to qualify for the group stage. They lost twice to Slavia Prague , 0-1 at home and 2-1 away. In the UEFA Cup, Ajax finally failed to prevail against Dinamo Zagreb . The team won 1-0 in Zagreb, but lost 3-2 at home and was eliminated due to the away goals rule .

The 2007/08 season was similar. Interim coach Adrie Koster's team missed the opportunity on the last day of the match to keep PSV from winning their fourth title in a row. It was even worse in the play-offs for the Champions League qualification: The four-time winner of the Champions League and the European Cup of National Champions failed in the final of the play-offs to Twente Enschede and thus missed participation in the so for the third time in a row prestigious competition.

During the 2008/09 season, Marco van Basten was the club's coach. But he resigned from his post shortly before the end of the season. Ajax only reached third place and overall had a disappointing season for its claims. Van Basten was then started by the former coach of Hamburger SV , Martin Jol replaced. For this it was the task to lead the team to the championship. With a goal difference of 106:20 they had by far the best in the entire league and in Luis Suárez (35 goals) the best attacker of the 2009/10 season, but it was only enough to finish second behind Twente Enschede . The team missed the championship by just one point. The decisive factors were the defeats against PSV Eindhoven (3rd matchday), Twente (13th matchday) and FC Utrecht (16th matchday). As a conciliatory end to the season, however, the cup final against Feyenoord Rotterdam was won after the championship ended . In the 4-1 victory, Suárez and Siem de Jong each scored twice.

2010 to 2018: Back to old strength

Frank de Boer , Master Trainer 2011.

In the 2010/11 season they again managed to qualify for the group stage of the Champions League. The play-off games against Dynamo Kiev ended 1-1 in Kiev, the second leg was won 2-1. Previously, they had already prevailed against PAOK Saloniki . Martin Jol's team faced Real Madrid , AC Milan and AJ Auxerre in the group stage . With two wins and one draw, it was only enough to finish third behind Madrid and Milan. However, this qualified for the knockout phase of the Europa League , but failed in the second round to Spartak Moscow . In the Eredivisie , the Ajax players kept in contact with the top position and fought a three-way battle with last year's winners FC Twente Enschede and PSV Eindhoven . It was not until the last match day that Amsterdam secured their first championship since 2004. The club started the season with coach Jol, who was replaced in December 2010 by Frank de Boer . This brought his new team onto the winning road. During the winter break, Ajax star Luis Suárez was sold to Liverpool FC . In his place came Siem de Jong , who together with his strike partner Mounir El Hamdaoui scored 25 goals this season. As a template provider, the Dane Christian Eriksen knew how to convince. The defense, on the other hand, conceded the least of all eighteen Eredivisie teams with 30 goals and was thus also an important link in the success of 2011.

In the 2011/12 season, Ajax was able to confirm the performance of the previous season. Frank de Boer's team secured the championship again with a six-point lead over pursuers Feyenoord Rotterdam . A cornerstone on the way to the title was the offensive around Siem de Jong , who achieved 13 of the 93 goals scored in the season. However, it should remain the only title win of the season, as they were eliminated in the cup in the round of 16 with a 2: 3 home defeat against Alkmaar . In the Champions League, Ajax faced Real Madrid, Olympique Lyon and Dinamo Zagreb in the group stage. While Real finished the group with 6 wins, Lyon and Ajax dueled for 2nd place. After both direct duels ended 0-0, the French finally prevailed due to the better goal difference. Ajax therefore had to continue playing in the Europa League , where they met Manchester United in the third round . After a 0-2 home defeat in the first leg, a 2-1 win at Old Trafford was not enough and Ajax were eliminated.

Well-known players such as Jan Vertonghen , Vurnon Anita and Gregory van der Wiel left the club in the coming season . In return, Ajax strengthened itself with Niklas Moisander from AZ Alkmaar and Ryan Babel from 1899 Hoffenheim . In the league, Amsterdam was again the measure of all things and secured the title hat trick with a six point lead. In the cup, however, AZ Alkmaar was once again a size too big. A 0-2 defeat meant the semi-finals. As Dutch champions, Ajax also played in the Champions League in the 2012/13 season. In the so-called “group of deaths” with Borussia Dortmund , Real Madrid and Manchester City , Amsterdam achieved a remarkable 3rd place, which meant that they were once again entering the Europa League. As in the previous year, however, the third round was the final destination when, after a 2-0 win in the first leg, they lost 2-0 to Steaua Bucharest in the second leg and were eliminated in the later penalty shoot-out.

After winning the 2012/13 championship , you were automatically qualified for the Champions League . It was again third in a group with FC Barcelona , AC Milan and Celtic Glasgow . In the Europa League , however, the third round ended again after the elimination, this time they failed at FC Salzburg with 1: 6 on the return leg. With the renewed championship title, they were once again qualified for the Champions League in the following season . In a strong group with FC Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and APOEL Nicosia , they finished third, as in the two previous years, and were allowed to continue playing in the Europa League. There they survived the third round by defeating Legia Warsaw , but failed in the round of 16 after extra time at FK Dnipro .

In the following year Ajax had to enter the premier class in the qualifying phase and was eliminated in the third qualifying round in a duel with the Austrian runner-up SK Rapid Wien . With a win in the Europa League play-off against FK Jablonec , the team was then able to qualify for the group stage . There, however, it was eliminated in the group stage.

In 2015/16 the runner-up was again won. The team failed in the Champions League play-offs at FK Rostov with a 3-2 win over PAOK Thessaloniki . So you had to take part in the Europa League again. There they were group winners in a group with Celta Vigo , Standard Liège and Panathinaikos Athens and after victories over Legia Warsaw , FC Copenhagen , FC Schalke 04 and Olympique Lyon reached the final, which was lost 2-0 to Manchester United . The strong home record in the competition was impressive - Ajax won all seven home games and only conceded three goals.

In the 2016/17 season , Ajax, after 6 years with Frank de Boer, now under Peter Bosz , had to admit defeat in the domestic league to competitor Feyenoord Rotterdam and became runner-up with one point difference. Thus the qualification for the Champions League was due again, but there they failed at OGC Nice and the Europa League play-offs were then over. Thus, for the first time in several years, participation in a European competition was missed. As a consequence, Bosz had to vacate his coaching post again. After an interim takeover by Marcel Keizer , the Presidium presented Erik ten Hag as his successor in December 2017 .

2018 to date: Ajax under ten Hag

Matthijs de Ligt , captain in the “Double” season 2018/19.

With the runner-up again , this time clearly behind PSV Eindhoven , qualifying for the Champions League was possible again . But without Mitchell Dijks and Justin Kluivert , who both moved to Serie A during the summer break . With victories over SK Sturm Graz , Standard Liège and Dynamo Kiew , they made it back to the premier class. After a 2-0 win in the penultimate group match against AEK in Athens , participation in the round of 16 was already fixed. In the round of 16, Ajax beat defending champions Real Madrid , the second leg in Madrid was won 4-1. In the quarterfinals, Juventus Turin were defeated with an aggregate result of 3-2. In addition, all Eredivisie clubs had agreed to share the income generated by PSV and Ajax from the Champions League. On May 5, 2019, the capital city won 4-0 in the final of the KNVB Cup against Willem II Tilburg and achieved their 19th cup victory. After a 1-0 win in London, a 2-0 lead in the first half of the second leg against Tottenham was lost 3-2. Due to the better away record, the English moved into the final of the Champions League against the eventual winners Liverpool FC . One of the best seasons in recent years was finally crowned on the last day of the league season by winning the 34th national championship.

The consequence of the strong preseason followed in summer 2019; With the captain and defense chief Matthijs de Ligt ( Juventus Turin ) and the midfielder Frenkie de Jong ( FC Barcelona ), two young top performers and guarantors of success left the club for top European clubs. The Danes Lasse Schöne and Kasper Dolberg also moved within Europe. Despite everything, the national Supercup was won by a 2-0 win over PSV . In the league, the first defeat followed on matchday 16, at which time rivals PSV were already 10 points behind the capitals. However, AZ Alkmaar was already the direct pursuer at this point . In the Champions League it was enough, however, despite renewed strong services only for third place in a group with Chelsea FC , the FC Valencia and Lille , which made for wintering in the Europa League. There were played two games against Getafe FC in the sixteenth-finals , one of which was won and one lost. However, with a final score of 2: 3, Ajax was eliminated. In the national cup, the team made it to the semi-finals, but lost there against FC Utrecht . The league season, which was canceled at the end of April 2020 due to a government decision in view of the effects of the global COVID-19 pandemic , the club finished in first place. They were equal on points with Alkmaar, but had the better goal difference and could decide the direct comparison for themselves, but were not awarded the championship title.

As early as February 2020 it became known that Hakim Ziyech , who had played a key role in the most recent team performances with his goals and assists, is moving to Chelsea in the summer . Joël Veltman also left the club after 18 years.

AFC Ajax NV

The professional football department has been spun off from the club into a public limited company (Dutch naamloze vennootschap , NV for short ), AFC Ajax NV , whose shares are traded on the stock exchange. Ajax is the only football organization in the Netherlands that is listed on the stock exchange. The association holds 73 percent of the shares in it. 7.69 percent are in free float . The other shareholders are the NN Group at 5.29 percent and Invesco Limited at 4.99 percent. The 9.3 percent stake in Adri Strating , who died in 2012, is held by 3.01 percent each by his widow Monique Strating-Schulte Fischedick and his children Richard and Ingrid Strating.

Jewish symbolism and fan rivalry

Ajax Amsterdam has been associated with Judaism among football fans for several decades . This has only in part to do with historical facts, such as the fact that before the Second World War the Ajax Stadium was located next to a larger Jewish district and the club was therefore naturally visited and shaped by Jewish city dwellers, and also that it there were some formative figures in the history of Ajax who were Jews. These include record- breaking players Sjaak Swart , Bennie Muller and Jaap van Praag , who was chairman of the club in the glorious 1970s (he survived the German occupation in World War II in hiding). Ajax honorary member and ex-president of the club, Uri Coronel , who lost a large part of his family in the Holocaust , believes it is "nonsensical to call Ajax a Jewish club". According to his statement, the club never was.

It was and is above all the fans of the club who contribute to maintaining the image. In the 1970s they began to respond to the anti-Semitism that they and the club sometimes showed with a bold philosemitism . Carrying the flag of Israel as a fan paraphernalia and tattoos in the form of stars of David have become a trademark of some Ajax fans. An example of this are the hooligans of the F-side association . This in turn led to a momentum of its own, which in some cases provoked even more violent anti-Jewish reactions. Chants from opposing viewers like Hamas, Hamas, joden aan het gas! ( Hamas , Hamas, Jews into the gas ! ) Or We go on the hunt for Jews were not uncommon in the stadiums, as well as sibilants that are supposed to imitate escaping gas.

Ajax fans reacted to such hostility from the fans of the club Feyenoord Rotterdam - their biggest rivals - with mocking songs about the destruction of Rotterdam by the Luftwaffe of Hitler Germany in 1940. The song " Tulips from Amsterdam " was rewritten as "Bombs on Rotterdam".

Since around 2005 there have been increased efforts by Dutch football clubs to curb racist or insulting chants in the stadiums; For its part, Ajax's management responded to the persistent anti-Semitic atmosphere at games with calls for people to stop demonstratively showing Jewish symbols and to get rid of the ahistorical reputation of a “Jewish club”. This approach of blaming Ajax fans is controversial. The football magazine 11 Freunde argued, for example, that the scourging of Jewish symbolism in the fan curve was "giving way to crude anti-Semitism and racism". Anti-Semite remains an anti-Semite, even if he is no longer openly confronted with anything Jewish. It is therefore better to provoke him so that his attitude is revealed. Furthermore, no one can presume to determine who should feel or pretend to be a Jew and a friend of Israel and who should not.

Youth work

Youth academy

The club's youth academy has been known for decades for its exemplary work and the training of many later national and professional players. She educated Johan Cruyff , Piet Keizer , Marco van Basten , Dennis Bergkamp , the brothers Frank and Ronald de Boer , Patrick Kluivert , Edgar Davids , Edwin van der Sar , Wesley Sneijder , Rafael van der Vaart as well as Matthijs de Ligt and even Belgian Players like Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen . As of November 2019, young players are being trained in a total of twelve teams from U8 to U19.

Over the years, the academy has built up an extensive network of cooperation, which includes the following clubs:

Jong Ajax

Jong Ajax
Venue Sports complex De Toekomst
Places 4,000
Head coach Mitchell van der Gaag
league First Division
2019/20 4th Place

Jong Ajax is the club's second team and works as an independent team. She plays her home games at Sportpark De Toekomst , and on rare occasions in the Johan Cruyff Arena . The team played for 21 years in the Beloften Eredivisie , which was dissolved in 2016 , a league in which only secondary representations from larger clubs competed against each other, and there were record champions with eight titles. Since the 2013/14 season , Jong Ajax has been playing in the second-rate, professional Eerste Divisie after being promoted , but like all other reserve teams is not eligible for promotion. Due to the professional structure of the league within the league pyramid of the KNVB and the semi-professional orientation of Jong Ajax, a player exchange between Ajax and Jong Ajax can no longer take place as it was in the "reserve league". This is only possible within the summer and winter transfer window; an exception applies to players who have played fewer than 15 games for the professionals.

In the 2017/18 season they won the championship title of the Eerste Divisie for the first time. Another great success was reaching the semi-finals in the 2001/02 KNVB Cup , which under coach Jan Olde Riekerink was only lost on penalties against FC Utrecht and prevented a final against their own professionals.

In the 2019/20 season , the team will be looked after by head coach Mitchell van der Gaag and his assistant coach Winston Bogarde , former Ajax and Dutch international. Other former players such as Michael Reiziger , Aron Winter , Marco van Basten or Adrie Koster had also trained the team in the past.
