Rafael Ferdinand van der Vaart (born February 11, 1983 in Heemskerk , Netherlands ) is a former Dutch football player . The midfielder made 109 international appearances for the Dutch national team with which he was runner-up in 2010. He took part with her in two world championships and three European championships .

Van der Vaart came to Ajax Amsterdam as a ten-year-old , became a professional there and won two national championships and the cup once. At the age of 22 he moved abroad. He played a total of six years for Hamburger SV and two years each for Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur . After a one-year interlude at Betis Sevilla , he ended his career in Denmark at FC Midtjylland , with which he became national champion in 2018, and at Esbjerg fB .

His marriage to Sylvie Meis , model and television presenter, which lasted from 2005 to 2013 , increased interest in his person at the time and also made the couple the subject of reporting in the gossip columns . The subsequent relationship with the model Sabia Boulahrouz , who was also the former wife of a former teammate, ensured that the broad media interest continued.

origin

Van der Vaart is the son of a Dutchman and a Spanish woman from Chiclana de la Frontera , Andalusia . His family belonged to the father's side of the social fringe group woonwagenbewoners (disparagingly also kampers called preferred self-description: reizigers ), which in the mid- 19th century came from impoverished layers of the Dutch population and as an internal group language Bargoens , a Dutch-based Rotwelschdialekt speaks. Van der Vaart lived on one of these woonwagenbewoners until he was 18 and later described this as “the most beautiful youth one could wish for” ( de mooiste jeugd… die je maar kunt wensen ).

Club career

youth

At the age of four he played for De Kennemers (1987-1993). At the age of ten, van der Vaart's parents enrolled the young Rafael in a youth player sighting at Ajax Amsterdam . His talent was quickly recognized and the Dutchman signed a youth player contract with Ajax.

Ajax Amsterdam

At the age of 17 van der Vaart made his competitive debut for Ajax's professional team on April 19, 2000 against FC Den Bosch .

In the 2000/01 season, the midfielder was able to prevail at Ajax and became a regular under coach Co Adriaanse . Because of his game overview and his technique, he was used by Adriaanse in the position behind the tips. That year he was voted Talent of the Year by Ajax fans. He also received the same award at the European level from the Italian soccer magazine Calcio Manager .

In the following season 2001/02 van der Vaart injured himself seriously on February 10, 2002 on the knee and had to operate on the meniscus . During another operation on April 2, 2002, his entire meniscus was removed. Nevertheless, he scored 14 competitive goals for Ajax.

In August 2002 he won the Amsterdam Tournament with Ajax against FC Barcelona and Manchester United . Van der Vaart himself scored two goals against Barcelona and was voted player of the tournament. On September 7, 2002, in an international match against Belarus eight minutes after being substituted on, he tore an inner ligament and was out until the end of October 2002. Another injury break followed from December 2002 to March 2003. Despite everything, he completed 21 games in the Dutch first division and scored 18 goals this season .

In the 2004/05 season he was promoted to captain of the team by Ajax coach Ronald Koeman ; the "armband" was removed from him after just a few months after he had refused, among other things, to play in a Champions League match against Bayern Munich on December 8, 2004 in the left midfield.

Hamburger SV

At the end of May 2005 van der Vaart signed a five-year contract with Hamburger SV . In his first season he won the UI Cup with HSV and qualified for the UEFA Cup , from which the team was eliminated in the round of 16 against Rapid Bucharest . At the end of the season, the Hanseatic League qualified for the next Champions League season with third place in the table .

2006/07 van der Vaart became team captain of HSV. After an injury break, he intervened late in the championship. Until his comeback , HSV had only achieved one victory in the Bundesliga season and was in the relegation zone. Despite strong performances in the Champions League, in which van der Vaart scored three goals in three games, the Hamburg group were bottom of the group and were eliminated. In the end, the Hanseatic League was able to qualify for the UI Cup .

At the start of the 2007/08 season van der Vaart spoke publicly exchange intentions to Valencia from. The club offered up to 15 million euros for the Dutchman; van der Vaart was photographed wearing a Valencia FC jersey. It was assumed that van der Vaart even forced the change by pretending to have a back injury before the UEFA Cup qualifier against Honvéd Budapest and not being able to play. The change did not come about due to the intervention of the HSV.

On October 6, 2007, van der Vaart set a historic HSV record: he scored once in seven consecutive Bundesliga games. This was previously only possible for Hamburger SV by Uwe Seeler in the 1963/64 season.

real Madrid

On August 4, 2008, Rafael van der Vaart moved to Real Madrid for a transfer fee of 15 million euros . Van der Vaart got the Royal a five-year contract. The Dutchman made his debut in a friendly against Independiente Santa Fé in which he scored one goal and set up another.

On September 24, 2008 van der Vaart managed the first, albeit not flawless, hat trick of his career in the 7-1 league win over Sporting Gijón . At the end of the year he was nominated for the election of World Footballer of the Year . In the second half of the season, however, van der Vaart was often only used as a substitute.

When Manuel Pellegrini, a new coach, took over Real for the 2009/10 season , the Dutchman was sorted out and his shirt number 23 was given elsewhere. After downsizing the squad, van der Vaart did not have to leave the club, also because he had not found a new employer. When the Brazilian Kaká was injured, the resumed player was even used as a regular player. Still, he wanted to leave Real Madrid when the season was over.

At Real, where he was twice runner-up, he was only five times over the entire season in his 58 league games, in which he scored eleven goals. In his ten goalless Champions League appearances, he was only on the field once for the full 90 minutes.

Tottenham Hotspur

After coach José Mourinho van der Vaart had not nominated for the squad for Real's first league game against RCD Mallorca and had suggested a change, van der Vaart moved to Tottenham Hotspur on August 31, 2010 shortly before the end of the transfer period . On September 1, 2010, the Premier League confirmed the valid transfer van der Vaarts; previously it was unclear for almost 24 hours whether all the regulations had been dealt with on time before the transfer deadline the day before.

Van der Vaart made his debut for the Hotspurs coached by Harry Redknapp in a 1-1 draw against West Bromwich Albion . He scored his first goal a week later on his home debut with a penalty to make it 1-1 against Wolverhampton Wanderers ; the game ended 3-1 for the Spurs. Van der Vaart scored goals for his new club in the second, third and fourth home games. In the first game against Arsenal , he secured his team's victory with one goal and two assists , which made him a fan favorite. He established himself as a leading player and game designer and was the club's most successful goalscorer and top scorer in his first season. The Hotspurs finished the league as fifth. In the FA Cup, they advanced to the semi-finals, but were defeated by Chelsea with 1: 5. In the Champions League, the Hotspurs were eliminated in the quarter-finals against Real Madrid with 0: 4 and 0: 1.

In his second season, van der Vaart reached the highest number of points in the club's Premier League history with Spurs, finishing fourth. You could still not qualify for the Champions League because Chelsea were qualified as the Champions League winner despite being sixth in the league. In the Europa League, Tottenham was eliminated in the group stage, as Redknapp mainly used a B-Elf.

At the beginning of the 2012/13 season van der Vaart came under the new coach André Villas-Boas before leaving HSV to two more league appearances. In total, he came to 63 games in the Premier League in which he was substituted six times and 36 times, the latter often in the last minutes of the game. He scored 24 goals. In the Champions League he played seven times for the Hotspurs, where he was substituted five times. Once his stake was shortened by a yellow-red card.

Return to Hamburger SV

On August 31, 2012 Rafael van der Vaart moved back to Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga. He signed a three-year contract until June 30, 2015 and received - like from 2005 to 2008 - the shirt number 23. HSV transferred around 13 million euros in transfer fees, which made van der Vaart the most expensive player at HSV up to then. Four years later he was replaced by Filip Kostić , who moved from VfB Stuttgart to HSV for around 14 million euros .

Van der Vaart played his first game for HSV (after his return) on September 16, 2012 (3rd matchday) in the 2: 3 away defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt . On matchday five he scored the intermittent 1-0 lead for HSV in a 2-2 draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach and thus his first Bundesliga goal in more than four years. The Bundesliga season 2012/13 ended the HSV on the 7th Place.

On April 9, 2013, van der Vaart took over the captain's armband from Heiko Westermann , who should be relieved. On May 11, 2013, he played his 100th Bundesliga game for HSV in a 4-1 win against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim .

The 2013/14 season was bad for HSV; HSV coach Thorsten Fink was released on September 17, 2013. His successor Bert van Marwijk was dismissed on February 15, 2014; his successor was Mirko Slomka . Van der Vaart scored seven goals and provided six assists in the first half of the season. During the second half of the season he was injured at times and could not build on his old performance. Therefore, he became a symbol of the decline of HSV, which was able to hold the class in relegation at the end of the season and thus avoided the first descent in the club's history.

Before the 2014/15 season , discussions arose about a sale of van der Vaart, as it was considered "getting on in years" after the worst season in the history of the HSV club to date. Ultimately, van der Vaart stayed with HSV and, as captain, led the team into the second round of the DFB Cup with a free kick goal and a converted penalty in a penalty shoot-out against Energie Cottbus . On November 1, 2014, van der Vaart scored his first goal since December 21, 2013 with a penalty, leading the team to a 1-0 win over Bayer 04 Leverkusen . During the first half of the season, the new HSV coach Josef Zinnbauer van der Vaart withdrew from the playmaker's position partially to defensive midfield for tactical reasons. In the away game on May 3, 2015 against 1. FSV Mainz 05 , van der Vaart played his 150th Bundesliga game for the Rothosen .

The then chairman of the board, Dietmar Beiersdorfer, described van der Vaart as "one of the best and most important players in HSV's recent past." After his contract expired, van der Vaart left the club. After his career, there is the possibility of returning to HSV in a different position. In his last game in the second leg of the relegation he secured relegation with HSV against Karlsruher SC .

Betis Seville

For the 2015/16 season van der Vaart returned to the Primera División and joined Betis Sevilla . He received a three-year contract with the promoted team until June 30, 2018. Van der Vaart made his league debut for Betis on September 24, 2015 in a 2-1 home defeat by Deportivo La Coruña . He was replaced after 49 minutes when the score was 0-0 for Dani Ceballos . Under the coach Pepe Mel , the temporarily injured van der Vaart could not prevail and until his dismissal in January 2016 only made seven league appearances (two in the starting eleven, no game over the full 90 minutes) and was partly not in the squad. Under the following coaches Juan Merino and Gustavo Poyet van der Vaart was no longer used.

Career end in Denmark

On August 10, 2016, van der Vaart moved to the Danish Super League for FC Midtjylland , where he received a two-year contract dated June 30, 2018. The reason was the proximity to the residence of his partner Estavana Polman in Esbjerg. Van der Vaart made his league debut on matchday 7 in a 0-0 draw against Viborg FF ; he scored his first competitive goal in a 5-2 home win against AC Horsens (11th matchday), when he made it 2-2. At the start of the 2017/2018 season, van der Vaart was no longer part of the Midtjylland first team. On the 21st and 23rd matchday (each as a substitute) he was finally used for eight minutes. At the end of the season, FC Midtjylland secured the Danish championship. Van der Vaart's contract expired on June 30, 2018.

In August 2018 it was announced that van der Vaart will play for Midtjyllands league rivals Esbjerg fB in the future . Before that, the midfielder stayed fit for the Dutch first division club PEC Zwolle . Van der Vaart received a one-year contract. On September 9, 2018, van der Vaart announced the end of his career after leaving Esbjerg fB; On November 1, 2018, he announced the end of his active career at the end of the 2018/19 season, but already on November 4, 2018, van der Vaart announced the immediate end of his career after various injuries.

On October 13, 2019, a farewell game took place in front of a good 30,000 spectators in the Volksparkstadion , in which a selection of former HSV teammates (including Aílton , Piotr Trochowski and Nigel de Jong ) against a selection of former international, mainly Dutch, teammates (including Ruud van Nistelrooy , Arjen Robben and Mark van Bommel ). There were 13 goals to the final score of 7: 6 for "Rafas Allstars" against "Rafas HSV-Stars". Van der Vaart, who played one half for each team, scored two goals himself. His son Damian, who came on as a substitute in the 84th minute, also scored once.

National team

Van der Vaart made his debut for the Oranje on October 6, 2001 against Andorra . He participated with the Dutch national team at the EURO 2004 in Portugal and the 2006 World Cup in Germany . Although he was not the first choice at EURO 2004 (under Dick Advocaat ) and at the 2006 World Cup (under Marco van Basten ), he made three appearances at the European Championships and three at the World Cup.

Also in the 2008 European Championship in Austria and Switzerland, he was part of the squad of Oranje and again graduated three games. At the 2010 World Cup in South Africa , he played five games for the Netherlands, but was mostly only a substitute. At the Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine he was again part of the Elftal squad. However, his goal in the third group game against Portugal could not prevent the elimination in the group stage.

On August 15, 2012, he made his 100th international match in the 4-2 defeat in Brussels against Belgium . Van der Vaart played his last game for the Dutch national team on November 19, 2013 in a goalless draw in a friendly against Colombia in Amsterdam . Due to an injury, he did not take part in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil . On October 13, 2018, van der Vaart was retired from the national team after a game in the UEFA Nations League against Germany and was named bond knight by the Dutch Football Association .
