Mirko Slomka (born September 12, 1967 in Hildesheim ) is a German football coach . He was the head coach of Hannover 96 for the second time in his career .

Coaching career

Started at Hannover 96 and Tennis Borussia Berlin

Slomka coached the Hanover 96 youth teams from 1989 to 1999 , including the later national players Gerald Asamoah , Sebastian Kehl , Per Mertesacker and Fabian Ernst .

From 1999 he worked at Tennis Borussia Berlin as a youth coordinator. In 2000, the then second division tennis Borussia was revoked its license to play in the league and the team was transferred to the regional league; almost all players then left the club. On July 19, 2000 Slomka was appointed head coach. Within a week he had to put together almost the entire squad for the beginning of the season. After a good start to the season, his team fell more and more. After five defeats in a row - the club was now on a relegation zone - Slomka was released on November 16, 2000. From 2001 to 2004 he worked again at Hannover 96, as co-trainer of the professional team under Ralf Rangnick .

FC Schalke 04

Slomka as coach of FC Schalke 04 (2007)

From October 1, 2004 to August 5, 2008 Slomka was under contract with Bundesliga club FC Schalke 04 ; initially he was responsible for training the first team as an assistant alongside head coach Rangnick. After Rangnick was given leave of absence in December 2005, Oliver Reck temporarily took over the training until Slomka was introduced as head coach on January 4, 2006. In the second half of the 2005/06 season Schalke 04 reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup , where they were eliminated in extra time against eventual tournament winners FC Sevilla . In the Bundesliga, the team finished fourth at the end of the season and thus failed to qualify for the Champions League .

The start of the 2006/07 season was mixed for Schalke in the Bundesliga, and the club was eliminated early in the UEFA and DFB Cups . In this situation Slomka replaced the long-time goalkeeper Frank Rost with the then 20-year-old Manuel Neuer . Then a winning streak began (out of 13 games, 11 were won) and the club led the Bundesliga table for months . On the penultimate game day of the season, the team lost the championship lead through a defeat against Borussia Dortmund to VfB Stuttgart and narrowly missed winning the German championship. In the 2007/08 Champions League season, for which the club had qualified due to second place in the Bundesliga, they played their way up to the quarter-finals. There the team was eliminated in April 2008 against FC Barcelona in two games (each 0-1 defeat). In second place in the Bundesliga table, Schalke lost the away game against Werder Bremen three days later with 1: 5. On April 13, 2008, the association released Slomka early. According to the manager Andreas Müller, it should not have been apparent that the team could develop further in terms of sport. Until then, Slomka was the most successful coach in Germany after Ottmar Hitzfeld with an average of 1.8 points per game between 2006 and 2008 . On August 5, 2008, Schalke confirmed media reports that the contract with Slomka had been terminated. Slomka received a severance payment of 800,000 euros for the early termination of the contract, which ran until 2009.

In September 2008, Slomka spent a week at Real Madrid and its German coach Bernd Schuster .

Return to Hannover 96

In 2011, Slomka celebrates Hannover 96's most successful season

After Slomka had taken a break for a year and a half, he was introduced on January 19, 2010 as head coach of the relegation-threatened Bundesliga club Hannover 96 . At this point in time, on the 18th matchday of the 2009/10 season , the club was in 16th place in the table. Slomka replaced Andreas Bergmann . On the last match day of the season, his team managed to stay in league with a 3-0 win in a direct relegation duel against VfL Bochum . Shortly before the start of the next season, disagreements began between Slomka and the sports director Jörg Schmadtke , u. a. Slomka criticized the roster for the new season.

On the 5th match day of the 2010/11 season Slomka reached his 50th win in his 100th game as a Bundesliga coach with Hannover in the game against Werder Bremen (4-1). The first half of the season was very successful for the club, it was completed with third place, which meant the best placement in the club's history. On January 25, 2011, Slomka extended his contract for two years. The second half of the season went well, Hannover 96 was in third place for a long time, which would have meant qualifying for the Champions League. At the end of the season, the team just missed this position with fourth place. However, this table status entitled to participate in the Europa League . After 19 years Hannover 96 qualified for a European club competition.

In the 2011/12 season Hannover 96 was again consistently in the top half of the table in the first half of the season . In the Europa League , the team initially beat FC Sevilla as an outsider in the playoff games and thus moved into the group phase. This was completed behind Standard Liège and in front of FC Copenhagen and Worskla Poltava , which qualified for the knockout phase. After victories against Club Brugge and again Standard Liège, Hannover 96 failed in the quarter-finals in the two-legged game with a total of 2: 4 to Atlético Madrid , which would later win the final. In the Bundesliga, the club under Slomka positioned 7th at the end of the season, which again meant qualifying for the Europa League. 7th place was enough for a place in the Europa League, since both finalists of the DFB-Pokal 2011/12 were already qualified for the Champions League.

In the following season , Hannover 96 positioned itself again for a long time in the areas of the European Cup places. In the Europa League , first place was achieved in the group stage. In December 2012, Slomka extended his contract with Hannover 96 until the summer of 2016. In the new year, Slomka and his team were eliminated in the round of 32 of the Europa League against Anzhi Makhachkala . In spring 2013, the dispute between Slomka and Schmadtke came to a head, whereupon Schmadtke left the club. The Bundesliga season ended Hannover 96 in ninth place.

The start of the 2013/14 season was initially successful for Hannover 96 with four home wins in a row, but all away games were lost by the 17th matchday, so that the team slipped increasingly in the table and Slomka came under criticism.

After his team lost the away game against SC Freiburg just before Christmas 2013 , the media speculated on an immediate separation from Slomka. This was also supported by statements made in interviews by the club's management under Martin Kind and Dirk Dufner , in which Slomka was now critically assessed. One week after the end of the first half of the season, Hannover 96 announced that Slomka, who was on Christmas vacation, had been on leave. The circumstances of the dismissal and the way the child treated Slomka met with widespread criticism in the media. Slomka's successor was Tayfun Korkut .

Hamburger SV

On February 17, 2014 Slomka took over the Bundesliga team of Hamburger SV, which was in 17th place in the table, in their worst season to date in 51 years. Slomka followed the previously dismissed Bert van Marwijk . He signed a contract until June 30, 2016, which also applied to the second division. He won his first game with Hamburger SV 3-0 against Borussia Dortmund . The remaining games up to the end of the season were then less successful, only two games were won, including a 2-1 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen . At the end of the season, HSV finished 16th in the table with 27 points and prevailed in the subsequent relegation to remain in the first division with two draws against SpVgg Greuther Fürth .

At the beginning of the following season, on September 15, 2014, Slomka was released from his activity after his team had not scored a goal and only won one point in the first three games, including two games against promoted clubs.

Karlsruher SC

At the beginning of the winter break of the 2016/17 season , the second division club Karlsruher signed SC Slomka as head coach. He signed a contract that ran until June 2018 on December 22, 2016 and started work on January 3, 2017. Slomka took over the relegation-threatened team in 15th place from interim coach Lukas Kwasniok . On April 4, 2017, he was released from KSC.

Again return to Hannover 96

For the season 2019/20 returned Slomka again Hannover 96 and took over the first team, succeeding Thomas Doll , who in the pre-season relegation to the 2. Bundesliga could not prevent. After the 12th matchday Hannover 96 released Slomka. The team had only won three times under him and had been in the bottom third of the table since the start of the season.
