The 2010/11 Bundesliga was the 48th season of the top German division in men's football. On the 32nd of 34 match days, Borussia Dortmund secured the championship.

The season began on August 20, 2010 with the reigning champions FC Bayern Munich's home game against VfL Wolfsburg (2: 1) and ended on May 14, 2011 with the 34th and final matchday. At the same time as the DFL's elite class, the 2nd Bundesliga started the 2010/11 season. Four weeks earlier, the first matchday in the third division was played from July 23 to 25, 2010 . The relegation games between the 16th of the Bundesliga, Borussia Mönchengladbach, and the third of the 2nd Bundesliga, VfL Bochum took place on May 19 and 25, 2011 and ended 1-0 and 1: 1 respectively. This means that Mönchengladbach remained in League 1.

At the beginning of the 2010/11 season, a slightly modified, new Bundesliga logo and a uniform game ball called Torfabrik were introduced.

For the first time since the 2003/04 season, two clubs from one city (Hamburger SV, FC St. Pauli) played in the Bundesliga. For the first time in the 20-year history of the Northeast German Football Association (NOFV), no club from the NOFV association area was represented in the Bundesliga this season.

The 1. FSV Mainz 05 moved up to the most successful "starting teams" with seven wins in a row since the start of the season. So far, only FC Bayern Munich ( 1995/96 ) and 1. FC Kaiserslautern ( 2001/02 ) had achieved this. In the end, Borussia Dortmund became champions every time. On matchday 13, Borussia Dortmund set a new record with a 2-1 win in Freiburg, as they were the first Bundesliga team to win seven times in a row away from home. Already after the 15th matchday Dortmund was certain as autumn champions . On matchday 32, Borussia Dortmund won the German championship prematurely and for the seventh time with a 2-0 home win against 1. FC Nürnberg and the simultaneous 2-0 win by 1. FC Köln against pursuers Bayer 04 Leverkusen .

Season course

Upper third of the table

The opening ceremony of the season

Borussia Dortmund under coach Jürgen Klopp started the season strongly and did not give up the championship lead from the tenth game day on. Although Dortmund had already achieved a good position in fifth place in the previous year, the young team was not considered a favorite before the start of the season.

Bayer Leverkusen participated again in the championship fight and was finally runner-up for the fifth time in the club's history, with second place being held uninterrupted from the 19th match day. Coach Jupp Heynckes was poached as coach of FC Bayern for the following season during the current season.

After the end of the 2009/10 season, FC Bayern Munich started the season as a big favorite, but then got off to one of the worst starts to the season and never got past third place. On March 7, 2011 it was announced that coach Louis van Gaal would be replaced by Heynckes for the following season. On the 29th matchday van Gaal was given leave of absence after a 1-1 draw in Nuremberg and his assistant coach Andries Jonker took over his duties for the last games.

Hannover 96 was able to improve significantly compared to the previous season. Under coach Mirko Slomka , the Lower Saxony started well and never got lower than tenth place. In the end they even fought a duel with Bayern for third place. 1. FSV Mainz 05 set the start record for Bayern and 1. FC Kaiserslautern with seven wins on the first seven match days and led the table from the fourth to the seventh match day. After that, the team coached by Thomas Tuchel slacked off a bit, but was never below fifth place and qualified for the Europa League. 1. FC Nürnberg, which last year only held their class through relegation, started the season rather weakly. In the middle of the season, eleventh place did not bring too much fear of relegation. By the 25th matchday, however, the Franks could work their way up to sixth place in the table. With a 5-0 win against FC St. Pauli, Dieter Hecking's team achieved one of the highest Bundesliga victories in the club's history; Christian Eigler scored the only "four-pack" of the season in this game.

midfield

The promoted 1. FC Kaiserslautern was in the lower third of the table for much of the season, but ended up in an unexpected seventh place. On the 25th matchday, FCK only finished 17th, but this weak phase was compensated for by a strong season end spurt. The team was able to win seven of their last nine games under Marco Kurz . In the end, Hamburger SV reached eighth place, around which it had fluctuated throughout the season. On March 13th, Armin Veh was replaced by his assistant coach Michael Oenning . Under coach Robin Dutt, SC Freiburg never experienced relegation problems and was now in fourth place. On March 21, it was announced that Dutt would train at Bayer 04 next year. In the end he reached ninth place with the Breisgauer.

1. FC Köln stayed in the relegation zone for a long time. Therefore, Zvonimir Soldo was replaced by Frank Schaefer on October 24th . He resigned on April 27th and Volker Finke was in charge of the remaining games and on the last day of the match achieved tenth place, the best position of the season. TSG 1899 Hoffenheim led the table from the first to the third match day. After that, Ralf Rangnick's team sank deeper and deeper. Even Marco Pezzaiuoli , the new head coach during the winter break was, this trend could not stop. The eleventh place on the last day of the game was the worst of the entire season.

Relegation battle

Like many teams classified as strong, VfB Stuttgart lagged far behind its own claims. Already after the first match day the Swabians were in 16th place in the table, in total they were 20 games on a relegation or relegation place, with the low point on matchday 22, when VfB separated four points from 16th place. Coach Christian Gross was replaced on October 13 by interim coach Jens Keller , who was followed two months later by Bruno Labbadia . He got 30 points in the second half of the season and VfB secured themselves relegation on the penultimate matchday with a 2-1 win against Hannover.

Werder Bremen under Thomas Schaaf finished third this time only in 13th place. After the first matchday the club was at the bottom of the table, after matchdays 20 and 24 on the relegation place. FC Schalke 04 started the season as runner-up. Nevertheless, the coach Felix Magath had rebuilt the team a lot and brought stars like Raúl , Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Christoph Metzelder to Gelsenkirchen. However, the club spent almost the entire first half of the season on or just above the relegation places. It was not until the 16th match day that the team stabilized around tenth place. On March 16, Magath was relieved of his duties and resigned, although he had reached the final of the DFB Cup and the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League . Seppo Eichkorn became an interim trainer, after which Ralf Rangnick , who had previously been released from Hoffenheim, was signed . Under him, the club finished 14th in the table and won the DFB Cup 2010/11 in a district derby against MSV Duisburg .

VfL Wolfsburg played a poor season and ended up in a real relegation problem. Steve McClaren , the first English coach in Bundesliga history, was replaced by Pierre Littbarski on February 7th . Felix Magath followed him on March 18, just two days after he was released from his duties at Schalke 04. With rank 15 the direct relegation succeeded.

Borussia Mönchengladbach was bottom of the table from the 13th to the 30th match day, but was then able to defeat the designated German champions Borussia Dortmund (1: 0), in Hanover (0: 1) and against with a final spurt of three wins in a row the SC Freiburg (2: 0) save the relegation place and there against the Bochum exist. Michael Frontzeck was released on February 13th and replaced by Lucien Favre .

Eintracht Frankfurt started rather poorly under Michael Skibbe , but reached the season best of fourth place on matchday 11. After that it went steadily downhill, which the dismissal of the coach on March 22nd and the engagement of Christoph Daum could not change. In the end, he was relegated to 17th place after six years of membership in the Bundesliga. In the second half of the season there was only one victory and the eight goals in the second half of the season are a record in the Bundesliga. The newly promoted FC St. Pauli, trained by Holger Stanislawski , actually started the season well for its circumstances. After the 1-0 in the catch-up game against city rivals Hamburger SV , St. Pauli finished 11th with 28 points from 22 games. In the last 12 games, however, St. Pauli only picked up one point and was finally relegated last.

    Kick-off times

    Scheme of kick-off times

In the 2010/11 season, the individual matches on a match day were usually kicked off as in the previous season:

    • Friday at 8:30 p.m. a game
    • Five games on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
    • Saturday at 6:30 p.m. a game
    • Sunday at 3:30 p.m. a game
    • Sunday at 5:30 p.m. a game

In addition, there were several exceptions: Immediately after FIFA's cancellation periods for national players (up to six times per season), the Friday game was moved to Saturday (3:30 p.m.). In addition, the Saturday game, which was scheduled for 6:30 p.m., was postponed to Sunday (5:30 p.m.) up to five times per season after Europa League weeks. On the fifth match day on September 21 and 22, 2010 (Tuesday / Wednesday), all games took place in the evening at 8 p.m., and the last two match days were played simultaneously on Saturday afternoon, as usual.
