In the 2005/06 season, Kurz was a full-time coach at SC Pfullendorf. In May 2006, Kurz returned to the "Löwen" and coached the TSV 1860 Munich regional league team.

2007–2012: 2nd Bundesliga

For the 2007/08 season, Kurz should have been promoted to head coach of TSV 1860. But because the club ended the employment relationship with Walter Schachner in March 2007, Kurz was declared to be primarily responsible for the first team on March 18, 2007. He was given leave of absence on February 24, 2009. Under the leadership of Kurz, the team won 18 times in 63 league games. Due to the tense financial situation of Munich in 1860, Kurz had limits on the design of the squad.

Since June 18, 2009, Kurz was the head coach of the second division club 1. FC Kaiserslautern . In its first season, the FCK managed to return to the Bundesliga . In August 2010, Kurz and the entire coaching team extended their current contracts by one year until 2012. In the first year of the Bundesliga, Kurz reached seventh place in the table with 1. FC Kaiserslautern after the team had been considered a relegation candidate by many experts at the beginning of the season.

After the eighth matchday of the 2011/12 season , 1. FC Kaiserslautern only scored five points. Kurz's contract was extended to June 30, 2013 in October 2011. On the following two match days, FCK won against FC Schalke 04 and SC Freiburg . This was followed by a series of 16 games without a win, so that Kurz was given a leave of absence on March 20, 2012.

From January 1, 2013, Kurz was the head coach of the first division club TSG 1899 Hoffenheim . Three months later, on April 2, 2013, he and manager Andreas Müller were released from their duties. For the 2013/14 season , Kurz took over the second division of FC Ingolstadt 04 as the successor to Tomas Oral . This commitment - the contract ran until 2016 - ended after nine match days. On September 30, 2013 he was dismissed after the seventh loss of the team and standing on the bottom of the table.

During the winter break of the 2015/16 season , Düsseldorf's Fortuna Kurz , who was threatened with relegation, signed on as head coach. There he succeeded Frank Kramer and received a contract valid until June 2017. On March 13, 2016 - after 81 days - he was given leave of absence. The team was on the relegation place of the 2nd Bundesliga after winning four points from seven games .

In March 2019, an agreement was reached on the end of the contract due to "no common vision" at the end of the 2019 season.

For the 2019/20 season he signed a contract with league rivals Melbourne Victory . After playing 13 games, the team was 19 points behind the leaders and champions Sydney FC in mid-January 2020 and, in addition to four wins, had six defeats.
