The 2015/16 season of the 2nd Bundesliga was the 42nd season of the second highest German division in men's football . It started on July 24, 2015 with the opening game of MSV Duisburg against 1. FC Kaiserslautern (1: 3) and ended on May 15, 2016. From December 22, 2015 to February 4, 2016 the season was interrupted by a winter break .
The champions and the runner-up of the season qualified for participation in the 2016/17 season of the Bundesliga . The relegation matches between the sixteenth of the Bundesliga 2015/16 and the third of the 2nd Bundesliga 2015/16 took place on May 19, 2016 (first leg) and May 23, 2016 (second leg), between the sixteenth of the 2nd Bundesliga 2015/16 and the third in the 3rd division 2015/16 on May 20, 2016 (first leg) and May 24, 2016 (second leg).
The SC Freiburg , who last season from the Bundesliga was staying, already secured at 32. Match the direct resurgence. One game day later, RB Leipzig was also confirmed as the promoted team and as the 55th Bundesliga club. The 1. FC Nuremberg took Ranking third in the Bundesliga Relegation to participate but was unable to be there Eintracht Frankfurt prevail, remaining second-rate. On the last day of the match, FSV Frankfurt and SC Paderborn 07 were relegated to the third division. The SC Paderborn, relegated from the Bundesliga in the previous season, was thus passed through to the third division within a year. The MSV Duisburg qualified as Table Sixteen for the second division relegation, lost there, however, against the third-placed 3rd league Wuerzburg Kickers and also dismounted.
