Bundesliga 2008/09

The 2. Bundesliga 2008/09 was the 35th season of the second highest German division in men's football. It began on August 15, 2008 and ended on May 24, 2009 with the 34th matchday. At the same time, the Bundesliga started the 2008/09 season. The SC Freiburg was honored as master of 2. Bundesliga for the first time with its own trophy.

The premier matchday of the new 3rd division had already been held three weeks earlier, the introduction of which, for the first time in 13 years, resulted in a significant change in the mode of the 2nd Bundesliga. At the end of the season, as between 1982 and 1991, relegation games took place between the sixteenth in the table in the Bundesliga and the third in the 2. Bundesliga, the winners of which were eligible to play for the Bundesliga in the 2009/10 season.

A similar promotion and relegation regulation was also applied in the transition between the 2nd Bundesliga and the 3rd division, which means that for the first time since the 1994/95 season there were fewer than four relegated members from the 2nd Bundesliga. This agreement was a basic condition for the approval of the representatives of the 2nd Bundesliga in the DFL general meeting of the new mode, because although a secure promotion place in the elite class was lost, on the other hand, with only two or three relegated teams, greater planning security for the clubs of the 2nd Bundesliga prevailed.

The champions of the 2nd Bundesliga were SC Freiburg , which secured promotion to the Bundesliga after the 31st matchday. On the same day of play, SV Wehen Wiesbaden was the first to be relegated, and on the 32nd day of play, FC Ingolstadt 04 lost their last chance to stay in the league. Together with Freiburg, 1. FSV Mainz 05 secured promotion. In the relegation games, 1. FC Nürnberg defeated Energie Cottbus in third place in the 2. Bundesliga , the 16th in the Bundesliga. In addition, VfL Osnabrück lost to third in the 3rd division, SC Paderborn 07, in tenth place .
