This means that Waldhof Mannheim remains in the Bundesliga. For the second time after 1986 a third game had to be played, for the first time the decision was made on penalties . A special feature of these games was that the long-time coach of Waldhof Klaus Schlappner had to compete against his old club as the coach of Darmstadt 98.
