The Kuopion Palloseura ry ( German  Kuopioer Ballverein or Ballverein Kuopio ; "ry" is comparable to the German eV ), Kuopion PS for short or just KuPS , is a football club from the Finnish city of Kuopio .

history

In 1923 the association was founded under the name Kuopion Palloseura. In 1949 the club played for the first time in the Mestaruussarja . Only in 1994 was the first descent in the Veikkausliiga to follow. In 1950 they became runner- up behind the Ilves-Kissat Tampere . In 1954 you had to be content with second place behind Pyrkivä Turku . But in 1956 KuPS was able to celebrate its first championship. After an outstanding season, KuPS had six points ahead of the HJK Helsinki . In 1958 , Kuopio won his second championship and would have encountered Eintracht Frankfurt in the 1959/60 European Cup , but KuPS withdrew his registration so that Frankfurt qualified for the round of 16 without a fight and later made it to the final.

In 1961 , KuPS almost went down. One point separated the two-time Finnish champions from relegation position ten at the end of the season.

In 1966 KuPS became Finnish football champions for the third time in its club history, and further successful years followed, in which the cup victory in 1969 and further championships in 1974 and 1976 were celebrated.

In 1979 they reached the second round of a European club competition for the first time as the Finnish runner-up in the UEFA Cup against B 1903 Copenhagen , but were eliminated there against Esbjerg fB .

In the 1980s, KuPS placed in Mestaruussarja always on the ranks 6 to 10. In 1988 they narrowly escaped relegation.

1989 Kuopio stood after a 5-2 derby win at Koparit Kuopio and a 3-2 in Helsinki at the HJK in the semifinals of the Suomen Cup . Here Kuopio defeated FC Reipas Lahti 4-0 and moved into the final. KuPS finally won 3-2 against cup defender FC Haka .

The first descent from Mestaruussarja, now renamed Veikkausliiga , took place in 1994. After six years of abstinence, KuPS celebrated a successful comeback in the top division in the 2001 season with rank 8. Two more relegations to the second-class Ykkönen followed in 2003 and 2006, but in each case succeeded in the direct return to the Veikkausliiga in the following year. In the 2008 season, the team finished penultimate and secured relegation only in the relegation against FC Viikingit . After a 12th place in 2009, KuPS became Finnish runner-up in the 2010 season. In the UEFA Europa League 2012/13 , the club survived two rounds for the first time and was only eliminated against Bursaspor .
