Mart Poom (born February 3, 1972 in Tallinn ) is a former Estonian football goalkeeper .
Club career
Poom began his career with Tallinna Lõvid and Flora Tallinn in Estonia, what was then the Soviet Union . After a year at FC Wil in Switzerland, he moved to English club Portsmouth FC in 1994 , but only played seven games and was loaned back to Flora Tallinn. In 1997 he moved to Derby County and made his Premier League debut at Old Trafford for Manchester United .
After relegation to the First Division in the summer of 2002, Poom moved to Sunderland in November of the same year . On September 20, 2003, he met in the 90th minute with a header for Sunderland's equalizer against his ex-club Derby. This hit was recognized by BBC Radio Five Live as “The best headed equalizer by a goalkeeper against his former club in the last minute. Ever! ”(In German, for example:“ The best header equalizer for a goalkeeper in the last minute against his former club, the best of all time! ”).
Poom's career has been set back by various injuries, and so he spent the 2003/04 season mostly recovering from them. He was loaned out by Arsenal London in 2005 for the role of third goalkeeper behind Jens Lehmann and Manuel Almunia before being finally signed in January 2006. He remained a substitute goalkeeper and did not play a single game in the 2005/06 season, but became the first Estonian to be awarded a Champions League medal after Arsenal lost the CL final to FC Barcelona .
He finally made his debut for Arsenal on November 8, 2006 in a League Cup match against FC Everton , which was won 1-0 by a goal from Adebayor . After the game, he stated in an interview that he would play for Arsenal for 'another 3 to 4 years'.
For the 2007/08 season, however, he moved to Watford, as Arsenal signed the Polish goalkeeper Łukasz Fabiański . After 19 games, he ended his career at the end of the 2008/09 season.
International career
Poom has been in goal in 120 international matches for Estonia . He made his debut in 1992 in a friendly against Slovenia . In 2003, Poom was named the best Estonian football player in the last 50 years as part of UEFA 's 50th anniversary .
