In the 1920s, the round number 1900 was chosen from oral tradition as the year of foundation. Football was dragged from England to Wil by two knitter interns around 1900 and quickly gained in importance with older students and apprentices, and football was played on evenings and Sundays. Until 1990, the FC Wil, with a short detour in the second highest division in 1922/23 as well as 1952/53 and 1953/54 , as well as a one-year guest appearance in the 1st division (at that time the third highest division) in the 1974/75 season , predominantly in the 2nd division .

Several well-known coaches started their careers at FC Wil or made a stop there, including Christian Gross from 1988 to 1993 or Hanspeter Latour and Marcel Koller at the turn of the millennium. The later GC , Tottenham Hotspur and FC Basel coach Christian Gross brought FC Wil from the 2nd division (fourth highest division) to the NLB (second highest division) within two seasons. They even took part in the promotion round to the NLA in 1992/93 and were able to qualify a total of four times for the promotion round to the NLA until 2002, but each time they missed promotion.

For the 1988/89 season Christian Gross first took over as player-coach from the previous coach Manfred Häni, who had just managed to stay in the league last season. The successes came in the first season. In the second half of the season, the club only lost one game and placed fourth.

In the 1989/90 season , Christian Gross' team did not make it up. In the 1990/91 season the team went with the clear objective "rise". The rise took place in June 1991 with a 1-0 win against SV Muttenz in the promotion round. By then, FC Wil had not lost a game in two years and 44 championship games. In the 1990/91 season Wil had only given three points in the championship. (A win back then only gave two points)

In the 1991/92 season , FC Wil rose to the National League B. In the cup he made it to the sixteenth finals, where he lost 2-0 to Kriens.

In the 1992/93 season the Christian Gross era slowly but surely came to an end. Gross ended his career as a player in the spring. At the end of the season, Gross left the club and switched to GC. Walter Iselin became the new coach.

The 1993/94 season was characterized by upheaval. The team was converted to a professional team, which led to some changes in the team. The long-time coach had left the club with Christian Gross. His successor Walter Iselin was not completely convincing and was replaced by Pierre-André Schürmann in February 1994 . At first he was player-coach at FC Wil for a season and a half. During this time, the club moved in the midfield of the league and reached the quarter-finals once and the second round of the Swiss Cup twice. In 1997 Schürmann left the association. He was followed by Marcel Koller from 1997 to 1999. Under him, FC Wil reached the Cup semi-finals in 1998, but lost 2-0 to Lausanne-Sport.

In the 1998/99 season Wil was NLB champion. Immediately thereafter, Koller moved to FC St. Gallen , followed by Hanspeter Latour for the promotion round. The Wiler stayed in the NLB. In the Cup, FC Wil beat NLA club FC Aarau 4-1 at home in the 1/16 final. In the last sixteen, FC Wil played against Lausanne like a year before and lost 4-1.

The 1999/2000 season did not start as smoothly as the previous season. Coach Latour was dismissed, later moved to FC Thun , later followed by Claude Ryf . The desired goal to reach the promotion round again was missed, Wil was at least first of the relegation round. In the Cup 1/32 final, FC Wil beat Zug 94 2: 4 after falling behind several times . In the next round, FC Wil were eliminated 1: 2 against FC Zurich.

The 2000/01 season, FC Wil qualified again for the promotion round, they did not make promotion again. In February 2001 it was announced that FC Wil would not extend the expiring contract with Ryf. Originally Martin Andermatt was planned for the new season, Andermatt even signed a contract in April. But he canceled his contract before taking office. Eventually Heinz Peischl became the new Wil trainer. The cup ended in the second round against FC St. Gallen after a 1: 3 home defeat.

Under him, FC Wil was able to rise to the top division for the first time in the club's history with a 1-1 draw against Winterthur in the 2001/02 season . In the second round of the Cup, the competition was again over for the Wiler after a 9:10 (0: 0, 1: 1) on penalties against Lausanne.

Participation in the Super League (2002-2004)

In 2002 , under Heinz Peischl, FC Wil rose 1: 1 in Winterthur to the top division NLA and reached the final round of the NLA. In 2003 FC Wil took part in an international competition for the first time ( UI Cup ). Wil played against Dinaburg Daugavpils in the first round , lost 1-0 away but was able to make up for this defeat with a 2-0 at home Bergholz. In the second round, FC Wil lost again this time against Willem II Tilburg 2-1, but Wiler still made it 3-1 at home in the next round. In the third round, the football club was eliminated from the European competition after a 2-1 defeat in the away game against FC Nantes and a 2-3 home defeat.

The newly promoted FC Wil made headlines in November 2002 when they defeated local rivals FC St. Gallen with a goal difference of 11: 3 , which was an NLA record. At the beginning of the year Heinz Peischl left FC Wil for FC St. Gallen. Peischl was replaced temporarily by Hans-Peter Meier and later by Martin Andermatt.

FC Wil was particularly successful thanks to its then President Andreas Hafen , who invested a lot of money in FC Wil. Hafen became president in 1998. Hafen always mentioned to the outside that the money came from “investors who did not want to be named”. However, he had embezzled around 51 million Swiss francs from his employer UBS , of which around 10 to 11 million went to FC Wil. The theft was discovered a week after the 11-3 win. In 2005, Andreas Hafen was sentenced in the first instance to five years in prison and to repay the stolen money. Andreas Hafen moved the judgment further and in September 2006 the judgment of the district court in Wil was confirmed by the cantonal court of St. Gallen. FC Wil was not directly involved in the process, as it is assumed that the rest of the board members knew nothing about it. UBS waived any reclaims from FC Wil.

After some calm returned, in January 2004 the Ukrainian investor Igor Belanow , a former player of the Soviet national team and European Footballer of the Year 1986, took over the majority of shares in FC Wil AG in the summer of 2003 and changed almost the entire management. These facts have so far produced almost only negative headlines (finances, frequent coach changes). The AG founded by him and his followers quickly found itself in inheritance proceedings. However, the FC Wil club was not endangered.

With the takeover, Martin Andermatt was dismissed in August 2003. Belanov used Oleksandr Savarov , a former Soviet international, as a coach. Since he did not have a UEFA license, he was officially replaced in December by Joachim Müller , formerly with FC Karl-Marx-Stadt ( Chemnitzer FC ). Zavarov became head of sports.

Only three months later, in February 2004, Müller was replaced by Tomáš Matějček . The players complained about Matejcek's extreme training methods and complained to Belanov. This dismissed Matejcek and brought back Joachim Müller. The former Swiss international Stephan Lehmann was at his side as his assistant . Belanow retired in March and calm returned to FC Wil.

Under the duo Müller / Lehmann, FC Wil surprisingly won the Swiss Cup in April 2004 . In the first Cup final they defeated the Grasshoppers Zurich 3-2. This is the biggest success so far in the entire history of the club and paved the way for FC Wil to access the Uefa Cup for the first time. But in the same year, after an unsuccessful series after winning the cup, FC Wil rose back to the Challenge League (formerly NLB).

From summer 2004 the coach was called Walter Hörmann , who previously coached FC Vaduz , the Liechtenstein national football team and SV Austria Salzburg . FC Wil narrowly failed in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Cup in autumn 2004 against the Slovakian club FK Dukla Banská Bystrica . In the championship it started with a 5-2 home win against FC Wohlen , but then the team crashed. The Wilers suffered many defeats and Wil ended up in the lower ranks of the Challenge League after the season.

On the 2005/06 season Hörmann was replaced by Maurizio Jacobacci , who previously coached FC Baden . In the cup they were eliminated in the round of 16 against FC Lugano 2-1 and placed seventh in the upper midfield of the league.

One season later, Uli Forte came to FC Wil as a coach. In the 2006/07 season , FC Wil reached the semi-finals after beating the Young Boys (2-1) from the Super League. In this quarter-final, FC Wil was able to make up the deficit with one player less. The semi-final against FC Basel (1: 3) was lost. Nevertheless, because of the exploit against Young Boys, the main cup sponsor Swisscom named FC Wil the Cup Team of the Year. Wil was also temporarily the front runner in the league in October. The 2007/08 season ended with FC Wil in 3rd place, only 2 points behind 1st place from FC Vaduz , so a possible promotion place was only just missed. Since the then coach Uli Forte moved to FC St. Gallen, many players became restless and also changed clubs. Dieter Münstermann was hired as the new coach, who also brought FC Wil to 3rd place, but they were 19 points behind second-placed FC Lugano.

In the 2008/09 season they placed behind FC St. Gallen, who had been relegated in the previous season, and FC Lugano. For the team under Dieter Münstermann, the last sixteen of the Cup against FC Zurich ended with a 0: 1.

After a poor start to the 2009/10 season , Dieter Münstermann was released in November. The second half began with the new coach Ryszard Komornicki. The rather weak season ended in sixth place. In the second round of the cup, the club faced regional rivals FC St. Gallen. They were eliminated with a 1: 2. FC Wil had swapped places with FC St. Gallen for this game. In spring 2010, a FC Wil striker, David Blumer, was suspended on suspicion of involvement in the betting scandal at the time. In May he was banned from the SFV for two years. In 2012, it turned out that Blumer was innocent. He was acquitted.

In the 2010/11 season Komornicki was sacked after nine games and five losses. In the cup they failed in the first round at FC Tuggen from the first division. For Komornicki, the previous sports director Axel Thoma took over the coaching position, initially on an interim basis and later permanently. FC Wil improved in the second half of the season and was again in fifth place.

Also in the 2011/12 season , nothing changed in the placement of the club in the Challenge League. In the end, they were back in sixth place. In the cup they failed in the second round at FC Basel just 3-2 after extra time. FC Wil even took the lead 2-1 in extra time thanks to a goal from Cavusevic. Before the Basler equalized and immediately scored the winning goal. The last competitive game was played in the old Bergholz Stadium on May 23rd. The stadium was rebuilt in the following season. Wil played this last game against FC Lugano 1: 1.

In the 2012/13 season they reached the quarter-finals against FC Zurich, in which they were eliminated 2-4 after extra time after beating Young Boys Bern 4-3 after extra time in the round of 16. In the championship it was enough for the team of coach Axel Thoma for fourth place behind Aarau, AC Bellinzona and Winterthur. This season, FC Wil played as a result of the new construction of the Bergholz stadium in the AFG Arena in St. Gallen.

The first home game of the 2013/14 season took place in the newly built Bergholz. They defeated the later promoted FC Vaduz 2-1, but were eliminated in the first round of the Würth Swiss Cup against FC Le Mont. They reached third place in the championship behind the confident promoted Vaduz and FC Lugano.

In the 2014/15 season , the tasks in the cup seemed easy. In the first round Wil defeated the first division Dietikon with 0: 4. In September the cup regional derby against FC Henau was on. With some difficulty, FC Wil defeated the second division side 2: 3 in extra time after Henau had equalized the lead. In October, long-time head of sports and later coach Axel Thoma moved to the Grasshoppers in Zurich. A few days later, Francesco Gabriele took over the coaching position in Wil. In the round of 16, FC Münsingen from the first division was waiting for FC Wil. After a half-time score of 3: 0 for the hosts, FC Wil was finally eliminated 3: 2. FC Wil fought relegation towards the end of the second half of the season. They hadn't won the last ten games before the last two rounds. Head coach Gabriele was sacked two games before the end after Wiler lost 4-1 to FC Winterthur. A new interim trainer was introduced with Erdal Keser . There was only one point difference to last placed FC Biel-Bienne, which at the same time had a significantly better goal difference. FC Wil faced their first relegation to the third division since 1992. In the last game, FC Wil won against Lausanne-Sport with a clear 4-0 and thus secured themselves relegation. The 4-0 win was the biggest win of the season. At the same time, the stadium record of the newly built Bergholz Sports Park with 2,680 spectators was broken.

In the run-up to the 2015/16 season , a Turkish company, the MNG Group , took over the football club with the aim of returning to the top league or playing internationally. The new coach was Fuat Çapa , the new head of sport Erdal Keser , who coached the last two games.

The long-standing Wil-President Roger Bigger was downgraded to Vice-President after an extraordinary general meeting at which the board of directors of FC Wils was supplemented with representatives of the new investors. The new president was Murathan Doruk Günal, the vice-president of the main shareholder of the MNG group and son of the MNG owner Mehmet Nazif Günal . After seven games with eleven points in fourth place, sports director Erdal Keser was dismissed. The sports director's task was taken over by a sports committee. The step was justified with “different opinions” about the development of FC Wil. In the cup, FC Wil was eliminated in the sixteenth finals against FC Schaffhausen 2-1 after extra time. In November, the new coach Kevin Cooper was introduced, previously with Servette in the Promotion League. In the last game, FC Wil awarded second place in the league. The club ended up in third place behind the confident Lausanne-Sport and Xamax. The day after the game, the termination of contract with coach Kevin Cooper was announced.

For the new season , FC Wil introduced Ugur Tütüneker as the new head coach . Roland Koch became the new head of sports . In the first home game of the season, the club played 1: 1 against relegated FC Zurich and at the same time broke the stadium record of the newly built stadium with 4440 spectators. The cup ended in the first round after a 4-2 defeat against the first division side Lausanne-Ouchy. In August 2016, an arrest warrant was issued against Tütüneker in Turkey for allegedly participating in the attempted coup against the Turkish president . As a result, FC Wil dismissed the coach. Martin Rueda became the new coach . After the last game of the first half of the season (Wil was third and 12 points behind Leader Zurich), Martin Rueda was dismissed. The previous goalkeeper coach Ronny Teuber took over on an interim basis . In February 2017 it was announced that the Turkish investors had ended their engagement. This was announced after the January wages were not paid. The other board members around Roger Bigger, who became president again, announced to want to save the FC Wil. At the end of March 2019 it was announced that FC Wil had been saved financially thanks to donations from private individuals and companies. Maurizio Jacobacci replaced the interim coach Ronny Teuber on the coaching post. As a result of this hectic time, FC Wil was deducted six points for licensing violations. FC Wil ended the season in last place and should have been relegated if FC Le Mont-sur-Lausanne had not withdrawn from the second-highest league.

In June 2017 the new trainer Konrad Fünfstück was presented. In the Challenge League 2017/18 , FC Wil finished in seventh place. In the 2017/18 Swiss Cup , FC Wil was eliminated 3-0 against the higher-class FC Thun in the second round .

In the 2018/19 season, FC Wil took first place for five match days. At the end of March, Konrad Fünfstück was dismissed as head coach due to a disappointing performance after a coach change was announced at the start of the second half. Ciriaco Sforza became the new coach . His assistant coach was the former Wil player Daniel Hasler . Finally, the club finished fifth after the worst second half of the league. In the cup, FC Wil reached the round of 16 and there, like last year, against FC Thun. This time, however, extremely close in the penalty shootout 3: 5 (0: 0, 1: 1).

The 2019/20 season began with the biggest change in players since relegation in 2004 and even during the phase among Turkish investors. A total of 19 players left the club. Among other things, Captain Sandro Lombardi , who ran a total of 165 times for the club in his career. Only six players in the 21-man squad were over 25 years old, including the new captain Philipp Muntwiler . After a strong first half of the season, with FC Wil in second place for four matchdays, a series of five games without a win followed. The first half of the season ended with a clear 4-0 win against Winterthur. The club overwintered in fourth place. During the winter break, Vice-Captain Nick von Niederhäusern prematurely left the club as the next veteran. In the cup, FC Wil won 1: 3 at Red Star Zurich in the first round. In the second round, FC Wil was eliminated against the superior FC Zurich with 1: 2, after Wiler led 1-0 in the meantime. In March 2020, the current season was interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic . While the championship was canceled in the amateur leagues, play was resumed in the professional leagues. On June 19, the season for FC Wil continued and immediately played 1: 1 against the league leaders and later promoted Lausanne-Sport. Commentators highlighted the 3-2 win against the promotion candidate Grasshoppers as outstanding. The club ended the season at the beginning of August with a 5-3 defeat against Lausanne-Sport, which had already been promoted before this game, and finished in 6th place.

Bleaching place and various meadows

When the football club was founded, there was no real football field in Wil. They therefore played on the hard bleaching field, but now and then also on meadows that farmers made available. Changing locations were the “Frohburg” (Pestalozzistrasse), the “Thurgauerhof” (Bronschhoferstrasse), the “Lindenhof” (Toggenburgerstrasse) and the “Gemsli” (Wilenstrasse).

Riding meadow

Later the team played on what is now the Reitwiese, which at that time was still an ice rink. The changing room was right next door in a changing room at the ice rink.

Lindengut

In 1920, the city of Wil bought the area at Lindengut (Lindenhof district) and offered the association a lease for 600 francs. The club was able to raise this amount with difficulty and was able to play there until the Bergholz was built. At times, over 3,000 spectators attended the games of FC Wils on the Lindengut.

Mountain wood

Sportpark Bergholz during a test match between FC Wil and FC St. Gallen. (2015).

The Bergholz sports park, of which the football stadium is a part, was built in 1963. Since then, the club has also played there, with one exception for one season (2012/13) when FC Wil played in the AFG Arena in St. Gallen because the stadium was being renovated. The stadium record with 7,300 spectators is the game against FC St. Gallen , which Wiler won 11: 3. Since the renovation in 2013, the stadium has an artificial turf and 6,000 seats (of which 700 are seated and 5,300 are standing). In November 2013, the IGP company bought the naming rights for the stadium. The Bergholz is now officially called the “IGP Arena” until 2023.
