The 88th Swiss Cup was held from September 14, 2012 to May 20, 2013. The defending champion was FC Basel . The Grasshopper Club Zurich won for the 19th time the Swiss Cup by a 4: 3 in the penalty shootout against FC Basel.
The mode
Ten clubs in the Raiffeisen Super League and 9 clubs in the Challenge League were directly qualified for the Swiss Cup. There were also 19 clubs from the 1st division (6 from Promotion and 13 from Classic ), 10 clubs from the 2nd interregional league and 16 clubs from the amateur leagues. They had to qualify for the Swiss Cup in regional competitions.
FC Vaduz from the Challenge League was not eligible to play , as this club took part in the Liechtenstein Cup , as were the U21 teams from the 1st division promotion . Furthermore, all other reserve teams were also excluded from the cup. If a second team won a regional cup, the first team advanced. If the first team was already qualified, the starting place was transferred to the finalists of the regional cup.
It was played in a knockout system. Each lap normally had to take place within a maximum of two days. The venue for the final was the Stade de Suisse in Bern .
1/32 finals (September 14-16, 2012): 64 teams, the winners qualified for the 1/16 finals.
1/16 finals (November 10th and 11th, 2012): 32 teams, the winners qualified for the round of 16.
Round of 16 (December 8 and 9, 2012, February 3, 2013): 16 teams, the winners qualified for the quarter-finals.
Quarter-finals (February 27, 2013): 8 teams, the winners qualified for the semi-finals.
Semi-finals (April 17, 2013): 4 teams, the winners qualified for the final.
Final (May 20, 2013): The winner won the 88th Swiss Cup.

As far as possible, teams from the Raiffeisen Super League were prevented from clashing. If a team was in a lower league, it was given home advantage, otherwise the team drawn first. The draw took place on November 11th.
Due to wintry weather conditions, the round of 16 matches FC Wohlen - FC Thun , SC Kriens - FC Sion and FC Aarau - FC St. Gallen had to be postponed. The three encounters were rescheduled on February 3, 2013.
