Roman Bürki (born November 14, 1990 in Münsingen ) is a Swiss football goalkeeper who has been playing for Borussia Dortmund since the 2015/16 season .
Career
societies
Beginnings in Münsingen and Bern
Bürki comes from Münsingen , a small town south of Bern . He initially enjoyed his football training at the local FC Münsingen , with whom his father Martin had already played in third class. He had also been a goalkeeper and remained clean for around 800 minutes in 1994. The 15-year-old Bürki then completed a trial training session at FC Thun , but was not accepted there. After a call from the youth goalkeeping coach of BSC Young Boys from the capital, he finally took his second chance. Although the young goalkeeper initially had concerns about failing again, his father motivated him to give it a try, which ultimately resulted in Bürki junior being allowed to play in the Young Boys' U16.
BSC Young Boys
Bürki gained his first experience in the men's area from 2007 as the regular goalkeeper of the Bern U21s. After two years he was awarded to FC Thun, of all things, in order to gain match practice at a higher level, despite conceding 2 goals per game. During the winter break, however, the loan arrangement was ended and Bern loaned the goalkeeper to Thun's competitor FC Schaffhausen within the Challenge League . Alternating with Flamur Tahiraj , Bürki received an average of only one goal per game, but ended up only in the bottom third of the table with the club.
Grasshopper Club Zurich
As part of a goalkeeper castling , Bürki moved to the top Swiss league at the beginning of 2011 in exchange for Ivan Benito on loan to the Grasshopper Club Zurich . After sitting on the bench at the beginning, he soon got his first seasons and developed into a regular goalkeeper. In February 2013 Bürki was definitely taken over for a payment of the equivalent of 600,000 euros. He received a three-year contract until June 30, 2016 with the option to extend for another season. In May he stood between the posts in the final of the Swiss Cup 2013 and won the trophy with the team against the defending champions FC Basel .
Sc freiburg
For the season 2014/15 engaged him German Bundesliga side SC Freiburg as successor to the after Hoffenheim migrated Oliver Baumann . In Freiburg Bürki played all 34 league games, at the end of the season the SC relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga .
Borussia Dortmund
For the season 2015/16 changed Bürki to Borussia Dortmund and signed a valid contract until June 2021. Coach Thomas Tuchel made him the new goalkeeper for the Bundesliga and DFB Cup games in his first season . The long-time goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller played in the games of the Europa League . On the first matchday of the 2015/16 Bundesliga season , Bürki played his first Bundesliga game for Dortmund against Borussia Mönchengladbach , which was won 4-0. During the season he played 33 Bundesliga games, two Europa League games and all six games in the DFB Cup, in which BVB lost to FC Bayern in the final . End of November 2016 he broke the 1: 0 home win against FC Bayern München , the metacarpal and fell to the back round. At the end of the season he was back in goal in the DFB Cup final and won his first title with BVB. Since his return, he has been Borussia's regular goalkeeper and prevailed against his compatriot Marwin Hitz, who was signed by FC Augsburg , in preparation for the 2018/19 season . In the 4: 3 home win against FC Augsburg on the 7th match day of this season, the Swiss player played his 100th Bundesliga game for the club.
In August 2019, Bürki and the club won the DFL Supercup against FC Bayern with a 2-0 draw . He stood between the posts in 39 competitive games across all competitions, played fifteen times to zero and was again runner-up with BVB. Before the end of the season, he had received a contract extension until June 2023.
National team
Patrick Foletti , goalkeeping coach of the national team , once said of his goalkeeper "Bürki has an above-average explosiveness, can keep his team in the game with strong saves on the line. In offensive play with his foot he has uncanny precision and sharpness. These are not all his Top quality, but certainly its strongest characteristics ".
Roman Bürki played five games for the Swiss U20 national team . He was nominated for the 2011 European Under-21 Championship in Denmark, but had to pass due to an injury.
Since May 2014 he has been a substitute goalkeeper in the squad of the Swiss senior team and was in the squad at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , but was not used. On November 18, 2014, he made his debut in a friendly against Poland 2-2 .
In qualifying for the 2016 European Football Championship in France, he was used for the first time in a competitive match in the penultimate game against San Marino. For the EM he was appointed as a substitute goalkeeper in the Swiss squad, but was not used.
At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, he was part of the Swiss squad . He was not used and was eliminated with the team in the round of 16 against Sweden .
Afterwards, Bürki stated that he did not want to play any more games for the national team for the time being in order to benefit his club career.
Private
Bürki's younger brother Marco is also a football player and plays as a central defender. Both got their enthusiasm from father Martin, who had also previously been active as a goalkeeper. The brothers' parents still live in Münsingen, where the father runs a heating company. In retrospect, the Swiss, who feels attached to his homeland despite moving to Germany, appreciates the solidarity in the small community.
After Bürki had had good experiences with a mental trainer at the age of 18 , he consulted him again in 2018.
