The 2018/19 Bundesliga was the 56th season of the top German division in men's football . It began on August 24, 2018 and ended on May 18, 2019 after a winter break from December 23, 2018 to January 18, 2019.
After 16 years the rule that the reigning champions have automatic home rights in the opening game no longer applies; the season began with a home game for FC Bayern Munich (3-1 against last year's third TSG 1899 Hoffenheim ). The schedule was published on June 29, 2018.
The Bayern Munich was a victory on the final day for the seventh consecutive time German champions.
Season course
Fight for the championship and international starting positions
With Niko Kovač as the new coach, the reigning German champions FC Bayern Munich , who had not strengthened themselves apart from Leon Goretzka from FC Schalke 04 and the two returners Serge Gnabry and Renato Sanches , started the season. Bayern started strong with five wins in a row, but from the fifth match day they got into a result crisis due to a draw with Augsburg, as they subsequently lost in Berlin, Dortmund and at home to Gladbach and did not get beyond a draw against Düsseldorf and Freiburg. In particular, the game against Fortuna from Düsseldorf, in which they gave a 3-1 home lead, was the low point. At the end of the first half of the season, however, the team caught up again and started an outstanding series, as they gave away only 7 points from the following 19 games. On the 25th matchday they took over the championship lead with a 6-0 win against VfL Wolfsburg and only gave them back for one matchday on the 27th matchday. Robert Lewandowski was the top scorer for the fourth time .
Borussia Dortmund started the season with the new coach Lucien Favre , the Westphalians had strengthened their personnel with, among others, the Spanish striker Paco Alcácer , the midfielders Axel Witsel and Thomas Delaney and the defender Achraf Hakimi . Borussia got off to a strong start into the season, took over the championship lead on matchday 6 and increased their lead to nine points at times. The club suffered a defeat only against Fortuna Düsseldorf on matchday 16. In the second half of the season, Borussia could no longer build on the outstanding performance of the first half of the season, in particular the increased number of goals conceded (26 in the second half) led to some unexpected point losses. After a dramatic 2-0 win in the closing stages against VfL Wolfsburg, Dortmund took the lead again at short notice on matchday 26, but lost it again on the next matchday with a 5-0 defeat in Munich. With Jadon Sancho (17 assists) the team provided the best assists.
The best defense came with only 29 goals against RB Leipzig, seven times goalkeeper Gulácsi played to zero. The team started the season with a triple load with only 18 professionals, but also qualified in the third season in the upper house with the Champions League qualification place for a European cup competition. In the DFB Cup, the lawn ball athletes made it to the final for the first time.
Last year's fifth, Leverkusen, with a talented and young squad, remained behind the entire first half of the season, but after the dismissal of coach Heiko Herrlich in December 2018 an upward trend developed. Herrlich's successor as head coach was Dutchman Peter Bosz , who had already coached Borussia Dortmund last year. In the first four games under Bosz, three of which were won with a total of 11-3 goals, there was a change in the team's performance, including the 3-1 win over FC Bayern Munich. Bayer won 6-1 against Frankfurt on matchday 32. All goals fell in the first half, which meant a new Bundesliga record. On the last day of the match, 4th place and thus qualification for the Champions League group stage was secured.
The two direct Europa League places went to Gladbach and Wolfsburg. In particular, Borussia from Mönchengladbach proved to be a serious opponent in the series, especially for the title favorites FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund, and with both of them also provided the second-best defense in the first half of the season (18 goals against). After the Borussia finished third in the first half of the season, they were only able to get 22 points in the second half of the season and ended the season in 5th place. Wolfsburg also started the season rather poorly after winning the relegation in the previous season, but reached 6th place with a good one Back round performances, including the highest-scoring win of the season, an 8: 1 against Augsburg on the last match day.
Cup winners Eintracht Frankfurt started the season weakly under the new coach Adi Hütter after the departure of leading players like Kevin-Prince Boateng or Omar Mascarell , but caught up until the middle of the first half of the season, left the lower half of the table after high victories over Fortuna Düsseldorf and against Schalke 04 and from then on stood on an international starting place. Due to two defeats at the end of the season (0: 2 against Mainz and 1: 5 against Bayern Munich), the team slipped to seventh place.
Table middle field
Werder Bremen caught up with the top ranks in the first half of the series and, for example, defeated Schalke, who was second in the previous year, but on the other hand, in addition to the high defeat against Leverkusen, games against teams from the upper third of the table were also lost. The now oldest Bundesliga goalscorer, Claudio Pizarro , extended his contract for another year before the last game of the season.
TSG Hoffenheim gambled away their European Cup place in the season finale against Mainz, for whom it was no longer about nothing, and said goodbye to head coach Nagelsmann , who was moving to Leipzig .
Newcomers Düsseldorf were considered the surprise team of the season. On the 14th matchday, Friedhelm Funkel's team was in last place in the table with 9 points, but subsequently stabilized, was able to celebrate relegation on the 29th matchday and ended the season in 10th place.
The 1. FSV Mainz 05 could keep the class in his tenth Erstligasaison, at 30. Match the mathematically necessary points were retracted. In a season with many high victories, a 5-0 win over fellow rivals Freiburg was remarkable , although the Rheinhessen had one of the weakest offensives in the league.
Relegation battle
FC Schalke, even standing in the table cellar for four match days, could not convince this season. The negative trend was already apparent at the beginning of the season, as the Royal Blues started the season with 5 defeats. Only in March was coach Tedesco released and replaced on an interim basis by supervisory board member and ex-successful coach Huub Stevens . An important 4: 2 in the second Revier derby of the season as well as mistakes by the pursuers from the basement brought the league on matchday 31.
In contrast to the championship decision, the decision in the table basement was already made on the 33rd match day. The relegated teams were 1. FC Nürnberg and Hannover 96 with 19 and 21 points. Both teams were on the direct relegation ranks 17 and 18 for the entire second half of the season. The relegation place went to VfB Stuttgart, who scored 28 points, one of the worst points among the sixteenth in the Bundesliga history. From the 13th match day the team consistently occupied 16th place with one exception. In the relegation games, VfB met 1. FC Union Berlin . After a 2: 2 in front of a home crowd, Stuttgart did not go beyond 0: 0 in Berlin and were relegated from the Bundesliga for the third time due to the away goals rule .

Stadiums, spectators, sponsorships and outfitters
Due to the relegation of Hamburger SV and 1. FC Köln, which have very large arenas, and the simultaneous rise of 1. FC Nürnberg and Fortuna Düsseldorf with stadiums that are also larger than average, the audience capacity of the 18 Bundesliga venues remained almost the same compared to the previous season and only decreased by 1,815 places to a total capacity of 876,279 places.
While the highest attendance figures were achieved in all 17 home games of Borussia Dortmund due to the highest total capacity, the two worst-attended games of the season were duels between Wolfsburg and Mainz. Only 20,334 spectators wanted to see Wolfsburg's home game against Mainz, while only 19,205 tickets were sold for Mainz's home game against Wolfsburg.
The table is sorted according to the audience average.
