Benjamin Cortus (born December 13, 1981 in Nuremberg ) is a German football referee . He whistles for TSV Burgfarrnbach.

Career

Cortus has been a referee since 1995. 2006 still a fifth division referee, he rose in the following five years to the second division . When he headed the third division match between 1. FC Heidenheim and SV Darmstadt 98 in 2013 , he caused a scandal: He sent Benjamin Gorka off the pitch with a yellow-red without having shown him the yellow card beforehand. It was later said that he wanted to warn Aytaç Sulu and in the process accidentally wrote Gorka in his notepad. Darmstadt initially lodged an objection, but withdrew it again because Cortus could not be proven that he had not shown Gorka straight red because of insulting the referee. Cortus has been a Bundesliga referee since 2016. He made his debut on September 25, 2016 in the game between 1. FC Köln and RB Leipzig . On September 9, 2017 Cortus testified at 0: 0 in the Bundesliga match between SC Freiburg and Borussia Dortmund to Freiburg Yoric Ravet for a foul on Marcel Schmelzer , this decision corrected after intervention of the Video Wizard , but in a smooth red card and introduced for the first time in the Bundesliga one player after the intervention of the video assistant from the field.
