Martin Petersen (born February 28, 1985 in Filderstadt ) is a German football referee .

Life

Petersen, who is a real estate agent by profession , is a member of the VfL Stuttgart association . In 2000 he passed his referee examination and from 2001 whistled games in the district league under observation and worked as an assistant referee in the major league. In 2002 he began to whistle games in the Württemberg regional league , making him the youngest ever regional league referee in Württemberg. From 2005 he took over the game management in the Verbandsliga Württemberg , before moving to the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg just a year later . From 2008 he was active in the Regionalliga Süd , before he was allowed to whistle first professional games in the 3rd soccer league in 2009 . He was also active as an assistant in the 2nd Bundesliga . In 2011 he became a permanent referee in the 2nd Bundesliga and is also an assistant in the Bundesliga , where he played 15 games on the line in the 2014/15 season .

On August 10, 2015, Petersen was hit in the head by a lighter in the first main round of the 2015/16 DFB Cup as chief referee in the game between VfL Osnabrück and RB Leipzig when the score was 1-0 in the 71st minute, whereupon he interrupted the game and stopped a few minutes later. He had suffered a minor concussion .

Petersen has been playing in the Bundesliga since the 2017/18 season . The first encounter under his leadership in the Bundesliga was the game between 1. FC Cologne and Eintracht Frankfurt on September 20, 2017.
