Bibiana Steinhaus (born March 24, 1979 in Bad Lauterberg im Harz ) is a German soccer referee . She is the first woman to lead men's games in German professional football; In 2015, Riem Hussein followed as the second woman. She is also the first woman to lead both the final of a World Cup and that of a women 's Olympic football tournament . Since 2016 she has been a member of MTV Engelbostel-Schulenburg , whose men's team plays in the district league.
Career
Steinhaus is a clerk in the Lower Saxony Ministry of the Interior and Sport with the official title of Police Chief Commissioner of the Lower Saxony Police . After her active football career at SV Bad Lauterberg and since her engagement as a referee in 1995, she still plays as a defender in the Lower Saxony police selection. She followed in the footsteps of her father, who is also a referee. As early as 1999 she became a DFB referee and directed games in the women's Bundesliga . In the men's area, she rose to the Oberliga Nord in the same year and in 2001 to the men's regional league . On May 31, 2003, she headed the women's DFB Cup final between 1. FFC Frankfurt and FCR 2001 Duisburg . In 2005 she was promoted to FIFA referee and as such was used several times in international matches and matches in the UEFA Women's Cup (now renamed the UEFA Women's Champions League).
In the 2007/08 season , Steinhaus was the first woman to lead a game in the second highest men's division . Your appointment to the referee squad received a lot of media coverage. In advance, the DFB had observed the career of Swiss referee Nicole Petignat , who has been leading Super League games for years . Steinhaus had been active as an assistant referee in the 2nd Bundesliga since 2003 . On September 21, 2007 she whistled her first second division game, which TSG 1899 Hoffenheim won 2-0 against SC Paderborn 07 . During this season she was used for the first time as the fourth official in the men's Bundesliga .
On August 10, 2008, Steinhaus was the first female referee to lead a men's DFB Cup game with TSG Neustrelitz's first round match against TSV 1860 Munich . In November 2008 she directed games of the U-20 Women's World Cup in Chile . She was also nominated for the 2009 European Women's Championship in Finland , where she was used in two preliminary round matches in Group C and a quarter-final match .
On April 15, 2011, she was nominated - together with assistants Katrin Rafalski from Bad Zwesten and Marina Wozniak from Herne - as one of 16 referees for the 2011 Women's World Cup in Germany. She whistled the group matches United States - North Korea and Equatorial Guinea - Brazil and the final between Japan and the United States . On April 12, 2012 Steinhaus was nominated as referee for the women's tournament at the 2012 Olympic Games in London - alongside Felix Brych , who took part in the men's junior tournament . There she was in charge of the preliminary round match New Zealand - Brazil and the final between the United States and Japan.
According to the chairman of the DFB referee commission, Herbert Fandel , Steinhaus is “the best referee in the world. I say that everywhere I can get rid of it. But everyone who has a clue about football also sees that. "(2012) Regarding a more frequently requested appointment of Steinhaus in the top German league, Fandel also said:" So far Bibiana Steinhaus was not one of the best referees in the 2nd division at the end of the season. League, so that promotion has not been justified so far. ”In May 2014 she was nominated for the U-20 Women's World Cup . She headed the opening game of the tournament, another preliminary round game and the quarter-finals between North Korea and the USA. Steinhaus was nominated again for the Women's World Cup in Canada in 2015 and headed two games there, one of which was in the round of 16.
In the 2015/16 season, Steinhaus showed the best referee performance in the 2nd Bundesliga, according to an internal ranking that became known later. On May 12, 2017 she was selected as referee for the final of the Women's Champions League , which was possible because for the first time no German team had reached the final. In the 2017/18 season she was part of a 24-person squad of referees who led games in the top German division in men's football ; among them she was the only and at the same time the first woman.
On September 10, 2017, Steinhaus became the first woman to lead a game in the men's Bundesliga when Hertha BSC played against Werder Bremen . On March 9, 2018, the DFB announced that Steinhaus would now also be used as a video assistant . In this role, she provided a novelty in the 2017/18 season on matchday 30: after the chief referee Guido Winkmann had already whistled at half time in the game between 1. FSV Mainz 05 and SC Freiburg , Steinhaus intervened by radio the game. She drew Winkmann's attention to a handball by the Freiburg player Marc-Oliver Kempf . Thereupon, after evaluating the video images, he decided on a penalty kick. SC Freiburg players who were already on their way to the dressing room had to return to the pitch on instructions from Winkmann.
On December 3, 2018 Steinhaus was nominated for the 2019 World Cup . At the World Cup, she was only used in the group game between hosts France and Norway, as she sustained a muscle injury in the game. She was nominated as one of 17 video referees for the 2019 U-17 World Cup for male juniors in Brazil . She is one of a total of 4 referees who hold various positions at this tournament.
Private
Steinhaus lives in Hanover and is in a relationship with former English referee colleague Howard Webb .
