The Dutch national women's football team represents the Netherlands in international women's football . The national team is subordinate to the amateur section of the Dutch Football Association. She has been coached by former national player Sarina Wiegman since January 2017 . The team's greatest success is winning the 2017 European Championship in their own country.
The Dutch association applied to host the 2009 European Championship . It was hoped that this would bring women's football forward in the Netherlands. In the vote, however, Finland was defeated . In terms of sport, the Dutch team was able to qualify for the 2009 European Championship and thus took part in a major tournament for the first time. There, after France was defeated 0-0 on penalties in the quarter-finals, the semi-finals were reached, in which the Dutch only lost 2-1 to the English in extra time.
In qualifying for the 2011 World Cup , the team met Norway , Belarus , Slovakia and Macedonia . The 13-1 win over Macedonia was one of the two highest international victories. In the end, second place was not enough to qualify for the play-off round.
When applying to host the EM 2013, the Netherlands was subject to Sweden. In qualifying for the EM 2013 , the team met England , Serbia , Slovenia and Croatia . It was only on the last day of the match that the non-playful Dutch women were ousted from first place by the English, but were able to qualify for the second time as the best runners-up in the group for the second time, where they were eliminated after the preliminary round.
Many Dutch national players play or have played in the German Bundesliga , preferring for a long time with former Bundesliga club Heike Rheine . The best-known players during this time were the goalkeeper and former record international Marleen Wissink , who played for 1. FFC Frankfurt until 2007 , as well as the midfielder and her successor as record international Annemieke Kiesel , who last played for FCR 2001 Duisburg .
In the FIFA world rankings , the Dutch women were able to improve to their best place to date, position 11, thanks to their first World Cup qualification in December 2014 . The victory at the 2017 European Championship , in which five victories were achieved against teams against whom they had a negative record (2 × Denmark, England, Norway and Sweden), made it into the top 10 to seventh place for the first time. With second place at the 2019 World Cup , the Dutch women improved to third place in the FIFA world rankings and qualified for the Olympic football tournament for the first time .
