European Women's Football Championship 1997 / Qualification

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The qualification for the 1997 European Women's Football Championship was held from September 12, 1995 to September 28, 1996 . Once again, UEFA did not determine where the final tournament would take place until after qualifying had ended: Norway and Sweden.

mode

A total of 34 national teams took part in the qualification. Due to the large differences in performance, UEFA decided on a new mode. The teams were divided into two categories. The category A teams fought for places at the 1997 European Championship, while the category B teams fought for promotion to category A.

16 teams played in category A, which were divided into four groups of four teams each. Within the groups, each team played each other twice. The group winners were automatically qualified for the European Championship. The runners-up and thirds identified four other participants in the first and second leg. The bottom of the group played with the group winners of Category B in the two legs to stay in Category A.

In category B, the remaining 18 teams played, which were divided into two groups of four and two groups of five teams each. Within the groups, each team played each other twice. The first in the group played with the last group in Category A in a round trip for promotion to Category A.

Azerbaijan , Estonia , the Faroe Islands , Austria , Turkey and Belarus took part in the qualification for the first time. Ireland and Yugoslavia returned while Latvia , Lithuania and Slovenia did not report their teams.
