Otto Stumpf

Otto Stumpf (born March 30, 1940 in Celle ; † April 17, 2017 ) was a German canoeist , sports official and politician ( CDU ).

education and profession

After graduating from high school, Stumpf studied chemistry and received his doctorate in 1967. From 1969 to 1972 he was plant manager in drug production. From 1973 he was a trainee lawyer at the Lower Saxony trade inspectorate . After the assessor exam in 1975 he worked as a district manager in the Celle trade inspectorate and in 1976 became chairman of the staff council. In 1977 he moved to the Lower Saxony Ministry of Social Affairs, in 1983 to the Ministry of Federal and European Affairs, where he was responsible for the reprocessing and final storage of nuclear fuels and radiation protection. From 1983 to 1990 he also headed the department of the trade inspection. In addition, from 1986 until his election to the state parliament, he was head of department for the area of ​​hazardous waste and residual material avoidance and recycling.

politics

Since 1986 Stumpf was a member of the city council of Celle. In 1996 he was appointed 1st  Mayor of Celle. Otto Stumpf was a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament from 1994 to 2008 as a directly elected member of the Celle constituency . Until 2003 he was chairman of the environmental committee, then as a member of the committee for interior affairs and sport as well as sports policy spokesman for the CDU parliamentary group.

Sporting performance and private matters

Stumpf has been active in canoeing since 1953 . In his twenty years as a competitive athlete, he was German champion 29 times and once world champion in canoe slalom . From 1997 until his replacement by Albert Emmerich on March 20, 2011, he was President of the Landes-Kanu-Verband Niedersachsen, then Honorary President

For winning the world championship in canoe slalom, he was awarded the silver bay leaf.

Otto Stumpf was married and had two children.
