Internationally, the year was marked by the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 45th President of the United States of America and by several terrorist attacks in various cities and countries around the world. At the European level, the exit process that was under way for the United Kingdom to leave the EU led to tough negotiations. For Germany, 2017 was marked by Frank-Walter Steinmeier taking office as the new Federal President , the decision to introduce “ marriage for all ” in the German Bundestag, the G20 summit that took place in Hamburg and the initially unsuccessful attempt to form a government after the Bundestag elections in September embossed. In Austria, 2017 was marked first by the swearing-in of Alexander Van der Bellen as Federal President , followed by the early National Council elections and the swearing-in of the new Federal Government Kurz I .
